You tell him to back off and give you some space. Don't depend on his friends, do it yourself. And if he doesn't take the hint and you don't like the clingy-ness then back away and tell him you need time.

You can be friends again, it just takes some time. While he was away, there must have been some things floating inside your head that you wanted to tell him or ask him that you couldn't and your oppurtunity is now. Spill your guts. And have fun. It shouldn't be that hard. Good luck!
