I am Catholic..but I very interested in finding out about different religions..is that weird? hah
My question is: How many sects (right word?) does the Protestant church branch out to? (ex: Baptist, Methodist, Lutherans, etc..) How are their beliefs different from the other Protestant sects..(ex: How are Baptists different from Presbyterians?..etc) How are they all different from the Catholic Church?
Thanks so much! (link)

It's not really wierd. The only wierd part about it is you're seeking that kind of thing in a protestant church.
Hit a synagogue.

Don't go; I think a dictionary will help you more than a bible at this point in your life.

I'm an Aethiest. I strongly believe that there is no god. I respect other people's religions, and I don't try to convert people or anything. Now, I've been in scouting for years. Lots of years. From a Tiger Cub Scout in 1st grade to a First Class scout now (I'm kind of slow with scouting). Anyway, the requirement for every class that says to live the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your every day life is now being enforced. My parents made me describe each part of the Law and Oath in great depth. When we reached Brave and Clean, I was starting to slip up. And then we reached Reverent.
Boy Scouts expects everyone to believe in some sort of god, and be straight. Gays and Aethiests have been kicked out in the past. And since Boy Scouts is a private thing, government can't interfere. People have tried to sue and lost the case. Now, I want to keep scouting. I love being a Boy Scout. Plus, it'll look good on my job application forms when I'm old enough that it won't be against child labor laws. =P So my options are:
a) Quit scouting (I don't want to. Really.)
b) Believe in a god (I'm not going to change my beliefs because of this. It's not in human nature.
c) Lie about my religion (Also against the Scout Oath. Not good.)
So obviously, I'm screwed. What should I do? It's putting so much pressure on me... (link)

Skip that part, pretend like you forgot it.

but my friend is a chrisitan. He wants me to go to church with him every week, and im not all that enthusiastic. I feel guilty for even thinking about saying no because i get all self concious when i think of him thinking of me as a sinner. Anyways we were having a very good time at a footbal game and then we were talking about stuff and somehow the topic just came up about dying. He was like, no offense but if you died right now i think you'd go to hell. He was being really serious. Well, it depressed the hell out of me. Im a nice person, i dont try to judge people, i like to share, my morals are higher then anyone elses and then i get depressed because i cant live up to them. I was really hurt but i didnt let on. He wouldnt elaborate, he said we could talk about it on the phone sometime. Well, do you think it was right of him to say that? Or am i just being dumb? I cant help but feel like im some kind of 'project' hes trying to save... (link)

There are three concepts of death.
Heaven and Hell makes the least sense out of the three.
There is nothingness ~ which was first really introduced massively by Friedrich Neitzsche. Who claims people make up religions because the concept of having nothingness after death is too much for the human mind to handle.
There is reincarnation, which makes a lot of sense; "Matter cannot be created or destroyed" ~ the cycle of life.
Then there is the afterlife ~ heaven and hell or whatever, the idea that after you die you transcend to a different level of existance.
Explain these three things to your friend.
And explain to him that any of the three can be right.
And that he needs to be much more open minded. If he wants to believe in something, splendid. But don't automatically assume that it is right because you believe in it. Since there is no proof, don't pretend like there is.

I am a Christian and so is my family the "Bible" aays it is bad to mastabate but i have a hard time not to what should i do (link)
|
Catholic church views it as destroying human life, to just masturbate. They view it as basically every ejaculation should be an attempt to create another human life.
Ironically enough, there are intense amounts of sperm which don't fertilize ~ and those die too. Even in sexual intercourse.
So, are you killing that many people because of a flaw in design?
Catholic church better start trying to remedy that.
Masturbation can sometimes be a good thing, it is a far better alternative to random casual sex and is a safe way to vent sexual frustration.
And if you are a male (which i've been rambling on, assuming that you are) then you can soon learn the benefit of doing so before certain other things to make events go by much easier.

How can you make yourself believe? Can you write "I Believe In God" a thousand times on a sheet of paper? Because I've been having trouble believing lately. (link)

It's not something that a person can just say in a reply. It's a fairly complex thing, and it would be easier to get into a conversation instead of a Q&A scenario.
If you would like to discuss it ~ You can talk to me on AIM/MSN/E-Mail (Although i'm going to be gone until tomorrow afternoon)

I have looked around a bit myself for the following question, and I will only take serious answers.
I would like to ask for links to text documents regarding revelation, and all the signs pointing to the return of Christ, and the end of the world, so to speak. I need info on the Anti-Christ. Some people believe he is already born. Some believed it was Hitler. Some believe G. W. Bush. I want opinions on this also.
For example When Israel becomes a state of its own, after that generation passes, Christ will return.
This is not exact quote....Obviously. However I need info of this nature. This is one of those signs. I need as much text and documents as I can possibly get.
Second, I need as many opinions from every perspective as possible. I.E. Atheists (I don't want "God doesn't exist. Don't worry about it.") I want reasons and such as to why you don't think it exists. All Beliefs are wanted here.
From what I have gathered, the Bible states after all signs are completed, Christ will return, and people get into Heaven, and the likes of this nature. The anti-Christ will be born. Do his 7 year business. Things will fall apart. Hell will be on earth, and so on. Most of the signs are done, and the end is near. What do you all think about this? I want as detailed answers as I can possibly get. I myself think the end could very well be soon. If you want to talk with me on this outside of advicenators, you can do so. Ask for my aim, or check my column. Solaris.
I did not go into too much detail, and I apologise. I want all of you to think about it really hard before you answer. Also...try to make the answers organized, and spelled correctly. Its easier on the eyes.
Thank you.

~We've been talking about this awhile, but I decided to post anyway. I waited too long for this question just to ignore it and let it slip off.
I'm a Zen Buddhist, however i've always been curious about philosophy ~ reguardless of religious boundaries. So I guess that makes my religion for the most part irrelevant. I can't say I know very much about any form of biblical apocalypse, well ~ an apocalypse at all for that matter. There are theories upon theories that can be given, however the one freshest in my mind is the end of the Mayan calendar. The Mayan's were quite advanced for their time in fields such as astronomy, and many people believe that the end of their calendar shows when they thought the world would end.
I however do not believe that mankind will ever destroy the earth, that is why I do not buy into the Hitler or George W. Bush theories. Much of that thinking has come from Michael Chrichton ~ He said through Ian Malcolm something along the lines of.
"It is arrogant of mankind to think that they can destroy the world. For things will adapt and evolve to meet the conditions of the planet, and thusly survive."
~That is not a direct quote, however a summary from memory (It's so much easier to get movie quotes than book quotes, however I don't recall that being in the movie. (They did great injustice to Malcolm in the movie.))
There have definitely been some very odd happenings as of late, while I doubt any of them are omens ~ It does make you wonder.
I am certain we will discuss this more later, and I want to leave some opening for conversation so I will leave you with that for now.

Tell her that having a bad time at church may have long lasting effects on your religious decisions.

Hi my name is Bill. Im 15 and I currently attend a christian church. As a baby my parents werent married, my mom ran away, my dad couldnt afford a baby soo he left me with his parents. I grew up with my grandparents till right before my 15th b-day when my grandma died from carcinoid cancer. after that i weant to live with my dad. instead of being distanced from God I feel closer. my pastor said im the strongest person he's met. what does he mean by that? by the way i want to go to olivet collage and become a youth pastor myself. A friend of mine was driving to a class one day this year and a friend of his in the car ahead of him was T-boned, he watched the girl in the car die and since then he has completely denounced his christian faith - told me for the first time last night that he has completely stopped practicing christianity and is now an agnostic. I find the agnostic thing hard to believe because he had been knocking my religion only a week prior. For not giving up your faith because of the bad things that happened to you - for not doing what so many other people have done and just think "if there was a god, he may have prevented this" you have stuck with what you believe in and its fairly commendable. I don't have a lot of stock in religion, I am a buddhist and while I practice theres still always that little athiestic side to me - I grew up a christian so I know what its like to let it go. People have their own reasons for doing what they do, and as it goes 'you are only given as much as you can handle'. He feels you have handled it in a responsible way, and therefore he considers you a strong person - in the religious sense, just because you still believe in god doesn't mean you can throw cars.
As far as I know only the dead religious figureheads have super-powers.

My friend is trying to change the things i believe in. He's jewish and i'm christian. I'm scared i won't get into heaven if i believe anything he does. i really dont know what i'm doing or getting myself into. He's one of my closest friends but it's almost like he's threatening to not be my friend anymore if i dont believe what he does.
what do i do? (link)

Don't be his friend.
Hes obviously a pushy bastard.

Hehe. Wicca.

ok heres the thing. im a christain and i pray to god when ever i can, but i always tend to block god out of my life when im happy. i only pray to him when im sad. i want to spend more time with god when im happy, but to tell you the truth...i dont really know what to say....HELP ME PLEASE! (link)
|
I don't know which is worse, the people that pretend to know a lot about a thing that does not exist, or those so arrogant as to assume that they are instantly right because there is no proof supporting the others claims.
Pray whenever the hell you feel like it. Its your religion and your choices. You don't know what to say - make it up, whatever. Say nothing at all, it may very well make no difference.

ok. i have a really really bad problem with porn. i cant stop. i went one week with out looking at it but thats only cuz i was on a mission trip. i need help. i feel like i am slipping away from god. what do i do? (link)
|
Rub holy water in your eyes until you are blinded.
Looking at porn isn't "against god". And if you are so worried about "slipping away from god" then maybe just read the bible when you want to look at porn.
Or recite the 10 commandments.
Or just blind yourself.
|
Hey everyone, um, i have a really bad problem with looking at porn. the longest i have gone without looking at porn is 1 week. I really honestly think i am losing my faith. I am afraid that i am getting further and futher from God. A lot of bad things have been happening to me and my friends. I cuss a lot more. I do stuff, I look at porn more and more and i cannot stop. Please dont tell me that what i am doing is wrong cuz i know that. I need some really good advice (link)
|
If you think that theres divine intervention causing horrible things to happen because you are looking at porn - and THAT hasn't stopped you. Do you think anyone here is going to be able to stop you?
|

"Religion is like a glass of water, as you get older, the glass grows and the same amount of liquid doesn't fill it anymore"
-Kevin Smith (which he may have taken that from somehwhere, but he is the one who exposed me to it originally)
Don't let people tell you what religion to join, there are plenty of options and they are all based on what you believe. I suggest studying different kinds of religions. If you have a lot of varying churches in your town (you know, more than just christian) I suggest you visit each and try to learn what you can. Its natural for everyone to question their faith at one time or another. No one can be quite sure what is true, we only lead our lives based on assumptions. It doesn't matter if you are a christian, jew, athiest, wiccan or whatever, as long as you believe in it, then its plenty fine.
Although, if you become a satanist, then I sincerely hope you end with untimely fortune for your unneeded ignorance.
Im serious.
