Ok well my computer is running out of space so I deleted stuff but the number of MB in my free space went even lower when it should be increasing.

If you computer has less than 4GB left, windows is probably increasing the size of the pagefile. You shouldn't stop it from doing that. It could also be system restores, go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup. Go to the "more options" tab. Press the third button, and the system restores will be deleted. I also recommend you use jdiskreport:

which will find big files. Don't delete things if you don't know what they are, jdiskreport *will* show files that can permanently ruin your windows installation if deleted.

what is the mp4 file? and how can i play it? help!
MP4 is short for MPEG-4. When it's .mp4 it usually holds video. You can play it on your computer by downloading the k-lite mega codec pack:

Don't install both, the CCCP is lighter, but plays less things. After you install the codecs and restart your computer, the mp4 will play in windows media player, or media player classic, which comes with both codec packs.

Hey Theymos, ygsgirl here with a frustrating computer issue.
I have an HP with Windows XP. It says on the tower that it is "XP Media Center Edition 2005" but for some reason the Microsoft website claims it is an XP Professional, or something. (By the way, their website is nothing but frustrating run around...)
Ok, I'm far be it from computer savvy, so please bear with me. I will surely sound like a dipstick.
Lately the programs I use seem to be messing up, and my computer is running slow as well.
For example: Windows Movie Maker- I have been trying to do a picture video project for my mom. I have tried to do it twice now. I put a lot of work into it, then suddenly I get this error message:
"Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close." and it gives me the "Send Error Report" option at the bottom.
It gives me this same error if I try to open the file, and it also freezes up and I have to do the whole control + alt + Delete business.
On Ashampoo 7, I try to burn a DVD project, and when I try to import the video files, it says that the file could not be added either because of an internal error or because the decoder could not be initialized. I have gotten both of those bad boys.
I have been having some serious issues with signing into my MSN messenger, as well as Yahoo messenger. When I troubleshoot MSN, it doesn't put a check mark next to "key ports", but an exclamation point. My little internet box says that my computer is online, so I don't know what the deal is.
I have never had these problems before. This recently started happening- maybe a week and a half ago. My husband did some thing where he set back the date to an earlier time on the computer. (Some restore feature?) That did no good.
These aren't the only problem programs. I can't think of what else right at the moment, and I don't want to make this 8 miles longer. :)
Also if it helps, it is a 250 GB computer, and only has about 20% space used. We did the disc clean up, defragmenter, ran Reg Seeker, and PC Doctor, and still have the problems.
I have done virus scans, which come up with nothing, and Spy Sweeper scans, which I'm not sure what that does, but I delete the stuff it comes up with.
Also, I download movies from the internet, but delete them from the "My Videos" and "My DVD" folders, if that is helpful info.
My husband is to the point of wiping the hard drive and using the system restore disks.
Can you suggest something we can do, or maybe do you know what the problem could be?

Windows eventually gets like that after being used a long time. I reinstall my computer every 6 months to keep it in the best condition possible. Your problems are most likely due to malware or data corruption.
For malware, run scans with 2-3 different malware detectors(I use spybot, ad aware, spywaredoctor, antivir, and spywareterminator).
For corruption, go to start>run. Type "chkdsk C: /f /r", without quotes, and press enter. In the box that pops up, type y and press enter. Then put your Windows Media Center install disk in the disk drive(don't use the recovery disk, use the install disk), go to start>run and type "sfc /scannow", without quotes. A box will pop up and you should wait until it's done scanning, then restart the computer. If HP didn't give you an install disk, call them up and demand one, I believe they are required by law to send one with the computer.
If you want, you can send me a logfile that will allow me to find disruptive programs on your computer. Download hijackthis:

Run it and select "Do a system scan and save a log file", send that logfile(which appears in the same directory as hijackthis.exe) to theymos@lycos.com .
If you end up reinstalling(which I highly recommend, after backup up your data), you might want to consider buying Windows XP Professional Edition, which is a bit easier to deal with. Good luck!

I had a virus on my computer the other day and I then did that system recovery(I don't really know how to get a virus off cause my norton anti-virus or whatever it was expired.) After I did the system recovery my speakers wouldn't work, on my thing I play music on it says "Media Error: Cannot play back the audio steam: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding." What could this mean? & How could I fix this problem? I'm not really an expert with computers! Thanks in advance!
Audio drivers are broken. The virus is probably still there, download antivir: http://www.free-av.com . That probably won't fix the sound. The easiest way to make the sound work is to reinstall windows. The other procedure(reinstall the drivers) is complex, and I don't want to deal with it on advicenators, you can contact me at theymos@lycos.com if you want to do that.

Yes, you can, without system restore, even. Download recuva( http://recuva.com ). Run it and search for your file. If it's been deleted for more than a week or so, it's probably gone for good, though :'( .

That'll kill you. Use chloroform, ether, or kerosene instead. You want things that smell like gasoline(though I wouldn't suggest gasoline). All of these have the potential to cause serious brain damage or kill, and playing with these chemicals is like playing russian roulette.

It probably won't help, but I would go to start>run and type "ipconfig /flushdns", "ipconfig /release", "ipconfig /renew", without quotes. Type each separately, and press ok after each; wait till the black box is gone before you do the next one.

i got a skinny myspace layout from whateverlife. i love it, except that it makes my picture small. is there any way to keep the layout but have my picture the normal size? im somewhat familiar with HTML, so i looked around, but didnt really see a certain part of the code to change or take out. does anyone know what it may be?

I think it's myspace that is resizing the picture. Try removing the to see if the picture changes back. If it does, then I don't know, there's nothing in the CSS that would change the picture size.

A gram weights about the same as a pen cap. The ounce measurement used on packages is roughly 28 grams. That sounds like a large spoon full to me, but I could be wrong.

**Edit: Changing the virtual memory size only works to a point, and it is much less effective than RAM. You will almost always have more room for 1-2 sticks of RAM, if you bought the computer new. If you change the virtual memory size, set both values to 4095 for the best performance. If you have no RAM slots left, buying a very small(6GB minimum) internal hard drive and putting the page file on that will be an alright alternative, though RAM is much, much better.**
This is a problem with your RAM. It is not a problem with your storage/hard disk, and anyone that tells you it is is wrong. You need to run less programs while playing the sims. Temporarily exit your firewall/antivirus/antispyware, and any other programs you are running(right click each icon in the lower right and select exit). If that still isn't enough, you need to buy more RAM. Go to Geek Squad(or wherever) and tell them "I'd like to buy two hundred fifty six megabytes of RAM, and I'd like you to install it", then pay them whatever they ask for(It'll be around $150); you'll need to give them your computer.

Ok I get the hiccups every single day (I have been noticing this by the way) its very annoying. I really hate it. I think its because I eat so fast. I have had the hiccups every day it happens randomely and I cant stop this. What is wrong with me? Most people I know do not have this happening every freaking day of their life do they? So whats a good way to stop this? And how do I get rid of them? I dont know what is going on with me now. Its very weird.?
Go to the doctor. You shouldn't have hiccups every day, and they can give you medicine to prevent it.

after i leave my computer on for awhile it gets an error message from my virus scan (AVG and yes its updated) that says "something bad happened in ... blah blah blah" and then my whole computer stops working properly. is there anything i could do about this. oh and AVG isnt the problem because this always happened before i installed it. thanks for any advice.

Oh please help me my ear has been hurting for a week and each day it hurts more and right now every other section a rush of pain just goes through it. Its like next to my eardrum ,the pain. When i turn my head it feels like somethings stabbing it. Sometimes though, not all the time for example right now it doesn't feel like that.
