It won't make you pass out so much as burn your nostrils and lungs. I've worked with ammonia in chemistry class, and it's really strong.

That'll kill you. Use chloroform, ether, or kerosene instead. You want things that smell like gasoline(though I wouldn't suggest gasoline). All of these have the potential to cause serious brain damage or kill, and playing with these chemicals is like playing russian roulette.

Yeah, probably. The fumes are pretty horrendous when it's far away from you... so yea.
