This summer I really want a nice tan so I can go back to school looking good, but I can't tan outside because I always burn or I don't get tan at all! I really want to get a membership at the tanning bed but I'm only 15 and my mom says that the tanning bed will give you skin cancer. Well i know all this and the sun gives you skin cancer too, so I don't see why I can't just go to the tanning bed. My older sister who's 19 goes to there and my mom doesn't care (well because she's old enough to on her own), but I don't know what to do. I just want a nice tan :(

By the way you're so great at giving advice! Keep up the good work! (link)
Tanning beds are really bad for you, and are worse than laying out in the sun. The best solution here is tanning lotion. Buy one that isnt too much darker than you already are, and then build up to a darker one. Gradual is good. Keep wearing it every day, and tanning lotions dont turn you orange! THey look most natural.

do NOT do a spray on tan yourself. I tried this once, and not only was I orange, but I had uneven streaks all over my body and I followed the directions exactly. Spray on tans at a salon are okay, but kind of expensive and you still end up looking kind of orange.

I've always dreaded the first day of school just because I don't deal with change very well. I know that it's not as bad as I think it'll be, it's always fine. But I still get panic attacks and get really sick the night before and that morning. Any advice on how I can overcome this? (link)
this exact thing would happen to me and still does, and im in college! To make myself feel better, if I started to freak out, I would just think about how I would be happy to see a lot of friends I didn't get to see very much over the summer. I got nervous about the new classes, finding them, and where I would sit..seemingly stupid things like that? The day or two before, I would figure out where my classes were on a map of the school and plan out where I'd be going in my head (it was a pretty big high school).

The night before I would feel sick too, and even threw up before. Things that helped me..I took some nyquil or something to make me fall asleep really easily because I usually couldnt. I had a good breakfast the day of school, and made sure my backpack was packed the night before (pencils..paper..notebooks etc.). On the way to school, listen to some of your favorite music that usually puts you at ease. Maybe ride with a friend if you can.

If you need anything else feel free to email me, you sound a lot like me lol

I'm going to be a freshman in college next year. I plan on having a single dorm room. It basically consists of a twin bed (that i could raise if i wanted to), and on the opposite wall a desk, mirror and sink, and all the rest of the wall is closet space. It looked really boring when it didnt have anything in it and i want some suggestions on what i can do with it to make it prettier. Oh and im a girl (link)
memory board for the wall, picture frames etc.

since you cant paint most dorm rooms, you can get wall decals (like big stickers you put on the wall that wont damage it)
look on etsy.com just such for wall decal or whatever you want on your wall, they have cute stuff. its like ebay, only people actually make the stuff themselves.

pick a color scheme and stick with it throughout the room. i chose brown and teal and i love the colors! however, teal has been kinda hard to find things in. a cute lamp..lots of storage stuff. i would loft the bed so you can store stuff underneath it. posters of whatever interests you, maybe a painting or something. you can get mirror markers and write on your mirror. get a cute rug, lamp, and definitely accessorize with stuff from whatever school youre going to!

I'm going to college next year for mechanical engineering, which requires about 100-something credits to graduate.

However, I've been thinking about double-majoring in Psychology. I think this takes 60ish credits.

Is this POSSIBLE or MANAGEABLE? What is the workload usually like for each course? How much studying and stuff does each usually take?

I already have some AP credits (in AB calc and psych). And I'm fairly used to doing shitloads of work (I go to a good high school and currently take 8 fairly challenging classes). I know that high school is pretty different from college, I'm just saying I'm not a slacker and I'm used to nerdy competition for high grades.

Anyway, do you think that I can manage all of this (AND still have a social life) ? Or is it just impossible? (link)
For every hour you take, most colleges recommend you study about 3-4 hours outside of the class. Usually taking 15 hours per semester is about average, so that is 45 hours per week of studying right there. Obviously it depends on the college you go to, if its easier then maybe you wont have to study as much.

Taking more than 15 hours will be very difficult but still doable, but taking more than 20 hours per semester i would say is near impossible. Most people who double major are majoring in 2 things that require similar classes but need a few more to get the second degree. Psych and mechanical engineering are not going to require hardly any of the same classes except probably the basics. So yes, you could double major in these two unrelated fields, but dont expect to finish college in four years. That would probably take about 6 years I'm guessing. Financially, it wouldn't be worth it.

Also keep in mind that the average college student changes their major 3 times in college, so you don't have to decide anything now. Keep your grades up so its easier for you to change your major.

I asked a similar question about about buying a laptop for college haha now I need to find a phone too. I've had a prepaid virgin mobile phone for as long as I can remember. I rarely ever have minutes, I mostly just text. Well now since I'm going away to college, my parents need to keep in touch with me so they're going to buy me my first 'real phone' haha. I'm looking for a cheap plan that would give me a good monthly deal for texting/talk. I heard cricket has some good plans? Someone once told me about a phone service that will give you unlimited text/talk for $35 but I can't remember what service it was? I'm used to only paying $20/month for texting so I really want to keep this cheap. The only functions I would need would be the capability to text/talk, a QWERTY keyboard and a camera (if possible). Any recomendations? Thanks. (link)
cricket is pretty much the only company that would give you that good of a deal. you dont sign a contract with them so that's nice, but you do have to pay full price for the phones (since other companies usually give you free/cheap phones because you sign a 2 year contract). Just make sure you check cricket's coverage area (ie does it cover the area your college is in etc.) because I used to have cricket and the coverage was pretty bad.

the next best thing would probably be virgin mobile and then sprint, but i dont think either of them go as low as 35/month.

I'm 13 and i cut myself, drink, suffer from depression, and have suicidal thoughts. i need help but i don't want to speak to anyone because no one knows. and i want to stop without some one even knowing i had this. how do i do this?? (link)
I love reading postsecret every week, and it promotes the hotline 1-800-SUICIDE. it's free and open 24/7
also, read www.postsecret.com
youd be surprised how many people are experiencing the same thing you are.

ok so i used that veet bladelss cream all up and down my legs, and it's all fine except my inner thighs where it's got little red bumps and it stings pretty bad. well i put some heavy lotion actually it's shea butter i think, so it feels a wee bit better, but does anyone have any ideas of anything else i should do to make it better?
please help me! (link)
aloe vera will definitely sooth the pain/redness. You can buy it at the store in a bottle or if you happen to have an aloe vera plant you can even cut off a piece and use the goo inside. Kinda cool lol

Hi! 19/f

I applied to a movie theater some time ago, and they called me yesterday for an interview. My interview is tomorrow, and I have no idea what to wear. I was thinking of wearing a cardigan, nice jeans, heels and a black shirt but I don't know if that's okay or not. I really need help because I don't really have anything business-y and I don't want to make a bad impression with my attire.

Any ideas? (link)
If you want to make a good impression, I wouldn't wear jeans. Granted it is "just a movie theatre" but I'm sure the people running the place don't think of it that way and want the best employees out there. You really can't overdress for any interview unless you go in your prom dress lol

I'd go for some black or khaki slacks if you have them. If not, any classy skirt would work too. Make sure it's no shorter than barely above the knees. Heels are good, and a cardigan will work. Nothing low cut. A blazer would also be a good choice though. Fix your hair and makeup, but don't over-do the makeup. You don't want to look sloppy.

Why do some people feel the need to stereotype? I find it very small minded, especially when people say:

*"emos" are suicidal
*"preps" are mean
*guys are horndogs
*girls are bitches when they get their periods
*teenagers are full of raging hormones and go through tons of mood swings
etc.

So why do some stereotype like that? (link)
Actually, people were built to "stereotype". We categorize all things, even people, so that we can simplify and better understand the world around us. It's basic psychology, and it's human nature.

Everyone judges people. Calling someone an "emo" or a prep is stereotyping, and the fact that "emos are suicidal" is just a characteristic of that stereotype. We were built to do this, even though it can often hurt people.

18-female.

Soo I'm still a virgin but I still do shave down there because I am sexually active - just not sex. I always feel like I have to be completely smooth down there and even the tiniest bit of hair will creep a guy out. Shaving every day would just be painful .. but if things ever do start to get intimate with a guy and I haven't shaved for like 3 days, I'll stop because I feel self-conscious about the hair. Is this normal, would a guy care? I've heard they dont but for me, I just can't let myself go when I have any hair down there. (link)
Most guys don't care about a little stubble. Honestly, they're usually happy that they get to be down there in the first place. If the guy cares enough about some stubble to say something about it, I think it says something about the guy. He's probably not worth the time. No guy I've been with cared if I didn't shave that very day. But really it's more about you. If you feel most comfortable completely bare all of the time, then go for it. Just do it for yourself and not the guy.

I really want to get my bikini line waxed. I am really sick of razor burn! The only thing i have a problem with is the pain factor. Does it hurt bad? (link)
if its just the bikini area and not like a brazilian, its not that bad. i do it myself at home, and its over with pretty quickly. if you do it yourself you just have to use the right technique. if you get it done in a salon then they're professionals and youll be fine. It stays smooth for several weeks so it's totally worth it :]

13/f and im getting braces this month =(((( i want to know a few things. do they hurt being put on? are there any ways to soothe my mouth if they DO hurt? (foods, etc) what color(s) should i get them in? what color(s) should i NOT get them in? thanks for your help! (link)
it doesn't hurt when they are physically putting them on, but your mouth will definitely be sore for probably a couple of days afterwards. I would suggest taking some tylenol/ibuprofen right before going to the orthodontist. you will have appointments once a month or however often they want you, and they will tighten them and it will be sore after each of these times too. but not as sore as the initial time. Just eat soft foods at first when you're adjusting. Ice cream/popsicles/smoothies are also good choices.

I liked doing my colors based on the season/upcoming holidays. ie springtime=pastel colors like light yellow and pink or something. summer=neon green & hot pink. christmas time=red & green etc.

don't get blacks or browns because they look gross on your teeth.

good luck! just remember that it will be worth it when you get them off i promise! i had mine on for 2 years & im so grateful I got braces because i love my smile now :]

I really want to get my fake nails taken off. Does anyone know how you can remove them other than chipping them off and going to the nail place (not an option as of this moment)? (link)
buy nail polish remover and put it into a glass or metal bowl. (it will ruin a plastic bowl). the higher the acetone concentration, the better it will work. then soak your fingernails in it for about 10-15 minutes. the nails should somewhat melt off/come off easily. if you are having to pull hard on the nails and it hurts, you havn't soaked them long enough (ive had this problem before). also, acetone seriously dries out your skin so be sure to moisturize with lotion afterwards!

Hey so i am 16 f and me and this guy from my school that i know welll are kinda planning to hookup. he asked me if he could finger me and do stuff to me. and then asked if i would do stuff to him. Well anyways it would be my first time doing anything!! so he weeks saying .... in a week. and im just not sure what to do really cause i get my period that week, and so im just gonna be like i got my period today. but still i wanna do something with him. What should i do and please dont say to young or something cause i raelly wanna try something fun. not necessarliy just bj and hj and fing. and eat. But don worry i am NOT going all the way. haha! anyways just i would like some advice.

(link)
I don't at all think you are too young for this so don't disregard my answer right off the bat, hear me out.

When you get that intimate with a guy, a lot of times girls get feelings later that didn't have before and you may get attached. If he is just looking for a hook up, he probably won't get attached and won't want anything more afterwards. That being said, I don't think the first time you do this should be with someone you don't care about. It's going to mean something to you if not now, than later in life. I had the opportunity to mess around for the first time with a guy I didn't really like romantically, but I decided against it because of some advice I got from some friends.

But now after I've done it before, I would definitely be up for a friends with benefits kind of relationships. I would have been sad if I would have done it with someone I didn't care about.

If you do want to do something fun still, I would suggest not doing anything on your period. You'll just feel gross the entire time and you won't enjoy it (imagine bloating..cramps, etc) Just wait a week.

hi ive been spitting up mucus for like 3 weeks but i dont have a cold or anything. and i haven't had one recently. i have been sneezing randomly all the time- could this be alergies possibly? if not what could it be?
thanks (link)
I agree with the person below me in that I am not a doctor and I don't know all of your symptoms.

However, I do have really bad allergies, and I know certain times of the year and even randomly my allergies get so bad they make me cough up mucus, and I even lose my voice sometimes. So yes, allergies could definitely be the cause. I take claritin-d (or just a generic-it's cheaper and the exact same thing) which you can get over the counter. If the mucus is an opaque yellowish green color, that means you have an infection. You will need to see a doctor to get some antibiotics to clear that up if it has been 3 weeks already. Also, the doctor can prescribe prescription meds for allergies that may work better for you. I also got some nasacort which is a nasal spray that really seemed to help me.

If you're really desperate, I've heard that a neti pot works wonders. Honestly I've never tried one because the very idea freaks me out/disgusts me but lots of doctors recommend it.

So im in a long distance relationship.
my boyfriend goes to school about 350 miles away.
now, you know how the smallest things matter in a long distance relationship?

when we video chat, he actually ignores me. hes a car fanatic, so hes on his stupid car websites seaching stuff for his stupid car. watching youtube videos of his car, he talks to his roommate (who is in the room 24/7) about cars.
i mean come on.... seriously? me being ignored caused me to get so heated... so i havent videochatted him in 2 weeks. i refuse.

he never puts me on his facebook status. we've been going out for a year and a half now... and he has only put me on 8 times. no joke. ive put him on EVERY single DAY i put up that i love him, i put up that he means the world to me, i put up when im wiht him..... ugh
i know facebook isnt the world, but you nkow how the smallest things mean so much to you?
my friend is in a relationship with a guy who goes to school in the same area and him and my boyfriend are friends.
my friends boyfriend make his status "so lucky with have her" and cute stuff like that.
when my friend and her boyfriend videochat, he calls her beautiful, he tells her shes his world and all that cute stuff.
her and her boyfriend have tons of pictures together. prob about 100+. me and ryan have about 15....
oh and her and her boyfriend have been going out for 8 months.
10 less months then ryan and i

but... i HAVE talked to him about it. but he continues to ignore me on videochat, and continues to not do anything to "publicize" our relationship. im not asking for much... im asking for some attention and for something to make me smile.... :/

what should i do now? ugh i dont know what to do! (link)
Well, for starters, all guys are different, and they don't all like PDA. I consider making your facebook status a gushy "i love her soo much" kinda thing a public display of affection, and maybe that's just not his thing? You can't compare your relationship with your friends, maybe your friend's guy just likes that kind of PDA. I wouldn't take the lack of facebook pics/statuses personally, I'm sure no matter who he is with, he doesn't do that sort of thing.

as for the video chat thing, ignoring you is pretty rude and you shouldn't have to put up with that. If you really don't want to talk to him over videochat, talk to him either via text or on the phone. Calmly explain that it hurts your feelings when he does that because that's the main time you get to see/talk to him because he lives so far away. Don't make it sound like you're attacking him or it will just push him further away. If he doesn't even care about how the way he's acting is making you feel, and continues to treat you like this, maybe you should take time to reevaluate the relationship. You deserve to be treated well.

I need new music. I really don't have a specific 'type', but I do like certain bands. So, I guess, I will just name those..

Is financial aid available for graduate students pursuing a master's degree? Or is it strictly for undergrads? (link)
financial aid is still available. There are grants and scholarships available specifically for graduate students.
However, you can not get the federal PELL grant for education beyond a bachelor's degree.

I have really bad allergies in the spring when trees and plants bloom out. I take allergy medicine but I still get a stupid runny nose sometimes. I use a lot of kleenex tissues but my nose seems to get a little raw feeling after awhile. Is there a way to prevent this and stop it from happening or heal it up really fast? (link)
buy kleenex with aloe vera in them, its a lot more soothing when you blow your nose with these

I saw this ad on TV about a cheap electric toothbrush for $15 and I've been thinking about buying it. I heard that electric toothbrushes are better for your teeth for some reason but then my friend said that they aren't and that they will damage the teeth. I am confused and don't know what to think. I don't want to damage my teeth. Which is best for my teeth? (link)
I don't know which toothbrush you saw, but electric toothbrushes won't damage your teeth if used properly.

I have a sonicare (it's quite a bit more expensive but I personally love it). When I first changed, I noticed a huge difference in how clean my teeth got. It was weird adjusting to it at first, it almost tickled. But once I got used to it, it was like that fresh from the dentist feeling every time I brush my teeth. It even is timed so you now when youve brushed your teeth for the recommended full 2 minutes (although you can stop it early if you want to). I would definitely recommend a sonicare, and I would imagine most electric toothbrushes are better than regular manual ones.

Even though it is expensive, I figure it saves you money (and pain!) when going to the dentist and not having to worry about cavities :]
