I'm going to be a freshman in college next year. I plan on having a single dorm room. It basically consists of a twin bed (that i could raise if i wanted to), and on the opposite wall a desk, mirror and sink, and all the rest of the wall is closet space. It looked really boring when it didnt have anything in it and i want some suggestions on what i can do with it to make it prettier. Oh and im a girl
Also, call your university (most are open for phone calls during the summer) and ask their suggestion for hanging pictures, posters, etc. At my school, the bottom of the crown moldings had a groove where small gold hooks could fit all the way around. I found some cute ribbon at JoAnn fabrics and used it with the hooks to hang pictures and a mirror.
A full length mirror is a must!
Same with bedraisers...I kept my printer under my bed along with pull out storage bins from Bed, Bath and Beyond (If you have a store near you, I'd highly recommend it for college dorms...they have everything you'd ever want, including bedding!
Beware of buying everything online if you're buying from different companies...two colors on the website screen might LOOK the same on the computer, but when they arrive in the mail they might be completely different shades. Find your bedding, window treatments, etc in person. if you must find them online, stick to the same company or go with 2-3 complimentary colors.
For my window treatments freshman year, I used these pretty green and white striped Ralph Lauren fabric shower curtains! Using a few safety pins I bunched up the top part and they looked pretty profesional!
Remember flowers...they add freshness and brighten up the room!

But that does not mean you can make your dorm room very stylish. For the walls you can add color that is easily removable with wall decals and peel and stick wallpaper. This option is great because the wallpaper literally peels right off and leaves no residue behind. It is also fairly inexpensive. You can find these options online. The wall decals are another cute option to add some personality. You can get designs, quotes, etc. and some websites you can design them yourself with any color and size you want! Some fairly inexpensive items you can buy to help liven up your boring dorm could be small 6x8 area rugs and cool funky accessories like mirrors, your favorite picture frames arranged in a neat pattern along the wall, unique lighting and lamps, bedding and pillows, and never forget your windows! Some long curtains with tie backs paired with sheers is a great way to dress up your windows. The sheers allow you to have some natural light because most dorms only have on dim light source on the ceiling, but the long curtains also add flexibility to close off the light for privacy. So the possibilities are endless. I am not sure what your style is but here are some links to some ideas for modern/contemporary meets retro. Hope you like them! Best of luck and happy designing :)
-Hanging Lights (Easy to hang and remove and great on either side of the bed for more lighting. Because they are paper they are battery operated or have a plug for the wall and you can get very creative will all the different designs they have! Plus it is VERY inexpensive!!):
-Cubes (Great way to store accessories, candles, small pictures, etc on the wall since you do not have much room for storage. They hang right on the wall. Plus alternating the shapes, sizes, and colors adds depth and interest!):
-Cool Accessories (Adding fake plants or different colorful ceramic or plastic vases on different sizes is a quick and easy way to dress up and accessorize your room. The vases look great sitting on the cubes too! The examples are have are just to show you ideas. These ones are VERY expensive lol)
ConfusedX2 answered Sunday April 18 2010, 4:45 pm: memory board for the wall, picture frames etc.
since you cant paint most dorm rooms, you can get wall decals (like big stickers you put on the wall that wont damage it)
look on etsy.com just such for wall decal or whatever you want on your wall, they have cute stuff. its like ebay, only people actually make the stuff themselves.
pick a color scheme and stick with it throughout the room. i chose brown and teal and i love the colors! however, teal has been kinda hard to find things in. a cute lamp..lots of storage stuff. i would loft the bed so you can store stuff underneath it. posters of whatever interests you, maybe a painting or something. you can get mirror markers and write on your mirror. get a cute rug, lamp, and definitely accessorize with stuff from whatever school youre going to! WittyUsernameHere answered Saturday April 17 2010, 11:54 pm: Anime posters and a computer with neon lights to attract the many nerdy virgins you'll be swimming in in the dorm rooms. Pick an anime which isn't licensed in America, otherwise you'll be decried as a poser and blacklisted among the many guys who probably won't have the nerve to ask you out or make a move anyway.
