The vagina isn't a vacuum! And that is the least of the problems with this myth.
I heard myths like this when I was a teen. I distinctly remember being told you couldn't get pregnant if you did it underwater (odd that they leave out the actual fact that it's damn easy to get stuck) or that you couldn't get pregnant on your first time (see, there is this little orange fairy that looks over the sacred, lovingly, mind-blowing pleasure and wonderfulness of every little girls first experience of vaginal sex and makes sure that it's consequence free!)
But this 'sperm dies when it hits air' one is new to me and it now drives me to bitch loudly at my roommates as they nod their heads sympathetically and gently encourage me to get a normal hobby.
Honestly though, I would joyfully hand out temporary bands to anyone spreading this myth. It is so stupid and so monumentally harmful to the everyone on this site.
Please, if you are reading this, join me in my war against the "sperm dies when it hits air" myth (or SDWIHAM, 'cause acronyms are fun.)
I want anyone who reads our advice to be able to laugh in the face of the next person who suggests this myth.
I want the people who stand by this myth to look more ridiculous then the Bush Administration dressing up like Doodlebugs and dancing to Kelly Clarkson's Miss Independent.
I want this myth annihilated.

I'm not so much mad at the myth; it's not the myth's fault. It the fault of very ignorant people, who hear it once, think it sounds cool and then start spreading it around without pausing to think about how unrealistic it is or researching the validity of the statement.
Ignorance is not cool.
Boldy spreading that ignorance is even less cool.
Ignorant misinformation taken as fact by young people on a topic as serious as sex and reproduction seriously ticks me off. No apologies there.

It doesn't so much bother me that people are starting the myth, it bothers me more that people are going to believe it, and then think you can't get pregnant. The next thing they know, BOOM. Here comes a baby.
I think it's ignorant and dangerous in the sense that columnists who are supposed to be helping the advice seekers, are actually putting them in danger by telling them this lie.

Actually, it's probably just an innocently warped fact: The HIV virus begins to die when it hits open air or water. It can only last seconds without fresh cells to attack. Even in a pool of wet blood, outside the body, it can last only minutes, about 15 at the most. So I suppose someone just got the virus and semen confuzzled.
But I haven’t seen questions about this in a long time. Guess I should think of something new to say in my forum.
