Body Image: Is too skinny even a thing?

Question Posted Sunday October 18 2015, 3:41 pm

(14/f) Is too skinny even a thing? Well apparently I am and no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to put on any weight. It's really annoying and kind of depressing how my friends are curvy with a nice body and they seem to joke that they're fat and take the piss out of my lack of it.

I have little boobs and a small bum and I hardly ever get a second glance while my friends get wolf whistles. Now what I really want to ask is: How can I accept my body image or is there another way to put it on?

Does protein stuff work? Or am I doomed to eat carbs for the rest of my life?

I wouldn't go for high-protein/crash-weight-gain stuff if I were you. It's unlikely to give you a more womanly figure (bigger boobs and bum etc). Well, your bum might get bigger, but probably not in a good way. Your boobs won't at all. You'll most likely get more curvy as you get older, and it'll probably happen quite rapidly too. You might never have broad hips, big bum and a really busty figure. You might be a slender sort of girl. Now I don't really think that's a bad thing at all, do you? Like you've had already mentioned, Taylor Swift is slim and slender. And how hot does she look? Bet not many girls or guys would call HER too skinny or take the piss, eh? Just hand in there, you'll fill out a bit anyway, in the 'right places' as you might say. What on earth do you want to be fat for? Because your mates are and they tease you? I reckon a bit of jealousy might be behind that mate! Look a little into the future. How many ads do you see for new diets? Gymn membership? Weight-watchers? Loads! You ever see an add for 'weight gainers'?? Or an 'eat yourself fatter' diet? No. Check out the models in Cosmo, Hraper's and Vogue modelling the latest collections on the runway....you ever see a fat one? Not likely is it? You got enough here to start accepting your body image mate? Love might be a better word than accept!! OK, there might well still be a bit of 'kid' in your figure at fourteen. But that'll take care of itself.

Kittenlover2000 made some good points which I will add too.

First your 14 and may just be starting into puberty. Puberty can last into your early 20's so don't give up on the fact that what you have today is what you will have for life. Your body is still changing and continue to change as you grow older. The fact that Kittenlover2000 did not or has not may be for a lack of a certain hormone.

Which is why I am going to recommend that you talk to your family doctor. Estrogen is very important in going from little girl to a women. While I am not a doctor and even if I were certain blood test need to be run in order to see if your body is producing enough estrogen.

Schedule an appointment with your doctor for a complete physical to include a complete metabolic blood panel including an estrogen screening. The physical should include checking your thyroid and metabolism.

Under a federal law called HIPPA young people 14 years of age and older do not need parental permission to see a doctor for anything related to their reproductive health. I believe this physical would include a female examination which would qualify this exam under the HIPPA law.

This law makes this examination totally confidential, meaning only you and your doctor will ever know what you are examined for and treated for if anything. Your parents cannot be told anything without your expressed permission in writing. Even if mom accompanies you to the doctors office. Once you say to the doctor or nurse you want this visit under the HIPPA laws mom will be asked to wait in the waiting room.

I am telling you this for I think it is important for you own well being to have this physical exam. If for no other reason than to put your mind to rest that everything is normal and you just need to wait and see how your body develops.

By the way protein shakes are not the answer to weight gain. Talk to your doctor and see if the doctor thinks you need to gain weight.

You're six years younger than me but I have the exact same issue! Frustrating isn't it? People may treat you like a kid because you don't look womanly and you sometimes feel unattractive and unworthy?

Well my advice to you would be to find something that you do love about yourself. So maybe you're super ambitious or have a pretty face? It can be anything but whatever it is hold on to it because it's important you have something positive to say about yourself!

Now onto the putting on weight aspect. Firstly you don't HAVE to put on weight that is, if you are healthy. And I wouldn't recommend doing new weight gaining methods without consulting a professional first.
There could be several reasons you can't put on weight. I'm not a doctor so don't take what I say as fact, but it could be that you have a high metabolism. An overactive thyroid or maybe as you're only 14 weight will come in your later teens.

But I get it, you're unhappy and want to change. It hard because you're so young so I wouldn't advise going to do weights at a gym at your age. Or prote in shakes actually. What you could do is try some squats. Make sure you get advise from a professional first but squats really help in building muscle mass around the hips, and so give you are bigger bum gradually. There are lots of easy exercises you can try.

Just remember you're still growing and that won't stop rill you're 19 so who knows what could happen in the next few years?
If it's any consolation I was very thin at you're age and even without trying puberty just meant even I got a little cubbies!
If it's a concern speak with a doctor but in my opinion wait to see what happens for now and when just enjoy beING a teenager.
Sure Beyonce is hot but so i's Taylor Swift-see what I'm saying?! Take care
