yes the huge thing will be the big question of "well what do you NEED" will she be using cloth or disposable diapers? will she be breast feeding, or formula?? these are all important things to ask that are not inappropriate if you will be at the shower and have intentions of buying a gift, then ask if shes registered anywhere and look for the cheapest item on there if your on a budget.

if you cant afford anything on the budget, you could go to a walmart or an arts n crafts store and look for something to MAKE the baby instead. baby blankets are a great one. you can also pay to have the babies name sewn onto the blanket. ((just make sure you have the spelling right)) ; )

look around some stores for some inspiration first if you need to. good luck.

New mothers need everything. Ask the person giving the shower if the mom to be is registered anywhere. Many baby boutiques have online registries for new moms. If so then you can pick something you can afford off the registry or chip in with others for a more expensive gift that she and Pastor may not be able to afford themselves. Maybe a baby carriage or car seat, which in every state is a must have just to bring the baby home in.

Note: If buying a car seat do not buy one second hand. In most states it is illegal to sell them second hand as you cannot tell if the seat has been made unsafe in an accident.

As a last resort you can always ask the mother to be what she may need for the baby. As the Preachers wife I'm sure she will be expecting that the congregation will be arranging a baby shower so you won't be giving away any surprise by asking. The surprise will be the when of the event not the event itself.

Depends alot on your budget. Starting out, she's gonna need everything. She'll likely have the big items like crib already but may not have a high chair since its not an immediate need. I've known 3 or 4 women to go together on paying for a high chair as a gift so thats a possibility.
If you decide to get clothing, the majority of people who are not experienced moms, will be buying New born, 6 mos sizes and a baby grows so quickly when young that it can outgrow the tons of baby clothes a person gets before the baby can wear it. I hear this lament all the time. So try finding something for older tots, especially if you know if its to be a girl or boy...like 1yr or 18months. Or buy the hooded bath towel, bath bath tub or a traveling changing pad to make it easier for mom to change kiddo on the go. Public changing tables may have lots of germs so a pad to lay the baby on is smart and she'll need several. Or a basket of baby personal needs like baby soap, shampoo, diaper ointment, baby powder. Even if she isn't going to use cloth diapers, a package of them will end up being used as spit up wipes. Babies are always spitting up and I always use old diapers for that. A thoughtful gift is a certificate to a portrait studio. It can be one inside a department store that isn't too expensive but parents love to get professional photos done of the baby. You can try for toy type things, like a cloth book, rattles, and the usual gifts marked for 6mos or a year old. A great one is the toy bar on a stand that baby lies under before it can roll or sit and it reaches up to touch, bat at and spin the toys on the bar. There are lots of good learning toys for really young kids to help them make use of their arms and legs. A walker is good too. Even a mobile for the crib but the child cant touch and reach that ever so an interactive toy is better. Hope this helps some
