Question Posted Tuesday April 8 2014, 10:35 am

i have been told that i won't be able to get pregnant by the usual way because of PCOS and that i would have to do ivf if i wanted a child. i guess i reacted badly and stormed out of the doctor's office. :( since i am too embarrassed to go back to the doctor could you please help me understand the way ivf works and the whole process of getting pregnant that way? thank you!

I'm not really sure of the full process but the internet is a beautiful thing and I'm sure you could find out information through there!

As far as being embarrassed, don't be! I'm currently doing my undergrad and have several internships at hospitals and all I can tell you from that experience is that you see everything!

Doctors are used to patients reacting in natural ways. It's very scary when you find out things aren't the way you planned. It's normal to get frustrated and your doctor understands that!

I'm sorry this has happened but luckily we have come a long way in the medical fields! So don't give up hope girl!!!

IVF: The egg is fertilised outside of the body. They monitor and stimulate your ovulatory process and remove your egg/eggs from your ovaries, and let sperm fertilise it in a fluid medium in a lab. The fertilised egg is cultured for 2-6 days in a growth medium then transferred to your uterus to try and establish a successful pregnancy.

You could consult a different doctor. (: Please don't feel too bad about needing IVF, at least your eggs are healthy. (:
I got my information from wikipedia, cos I don't know much about this. You could Google to find out more information too. (: I hope I gave you enough information on the process of how IVF works, though.

Ok, So i did some research. From what I have read: "The IVF treatment cycle involves taking fertility drugs to stimulate the ovaries to produce several mature eggs. The eggs are then retrieved, along with the sperm, and then the eggs and sperm are fertilized in a laboratory." So it seems that if a woman wants to have a child, but can't create one the natural way you can have them fertilized in a laboratory and then infused into the uterus.

Is it you or your partner who has infertility problems? because it can go both ways. There is a consultation center in LA (you did not specify where you live and or age) where you can go and see if IVF is right for you. Also age could be a factor, but I'm going to assume you are around late 20's early-middle 30's.

You deserve to have children, while I am not an expert in this field, it is worth looking into. I wish you all of the luck in the world, and to a wonderful future of hopefully having children. Good Luck Dear :)

One last thing, You should NOT be afraid or embarrassed to go back to the doctors. They can help!

My best friend has PCOS and she just had her beautiful baby 2 weeks ago!

First off, there are several steps you should go through before having IVF done.

One, your doctor should suggest trying to conceive naturally first. Not everyone with PCOS is unable to conceive. Generally doctors recommend trying between 6months-1 year before moving to the next step.

The second step is to try fertility drugs. My friend was unable to conceive naturally, but she was able to conceive after several months on Clomid, one of the several fertility drugs on the market.

If the first drug your doctor tries doesn't work, he or she may try several other drugs.

The next step after that would be IVF. IVF consists of several steps. First, you would have to take injectable drugs every day for a month. These drugs would cause you to ovulate. Then, a doctor would surgically remove the eggs from your ovary (using a very small needle). The eggs that the doctor extracts would then be fertilised with your partner's sperm. The zygotes would be allowed to divide, and then the best embryos (usually the biggest ones) would be selected- usually only 1-2 for a first round. These embryos would be placed in your uterus and hopefully would grow into a baby!

If the first round of IVF doesn't work, the next step would be to do several other rounds, and then after that, looking for donor eggs. (Because you have PCOS, your eggs are actually probably fine- because your hormones don't work properly you simply aren't probably ovulating.)

I'm not sure about ivf. But I have PCOS yes it is very difficult to get pregnant. I have two children one before PCOS and one after. It took a while to get pregnant with my second but I never gave up. Don't be embarrassed to go back to the doctors. It is a stressful thing to deal with. You became over whelmed and removed your self from the situation go back. I pray every thing works out for you.
