Federal Law known as HIPPA & getting labia plastic surgery

Question Posted Monday May 13 2013, 9:22 pm

F/15
my labia is irregularly large... akward... soo i wanna get the plastic surgery to shorten them, so my question is would the HIPPA Law apply to this? if not how do i confront my mother about this? we are very open about relationships, sex and just everything in general, btw.

below i have a little more detail on the HIPPA Law:
By a Federal Law known as HIPPA anyone over the age of 14 may seek medical treatment without parental consent or knowledge for any problem related to their reproductive system.

The short answer to your question is yes the HIPPA Law would apply to the point that you could make an appointment to see a GYN to be examined and discuss your complaint. As for any type of surgery HIPPA may or may not apply depending on just what your complaint is and how the doctor evaluates your complaint.

If the doctor say finds that your labia is causing you a medical problem then it might be possible for some type of surgery to done to correct this problem. Would you need parental permission to have this surgery? That is where HIPPA becomes a little vague. If the surgery is deemed purely cosmetic then HIPPA will not apply and parental permission will be required.

I believe it was last year the discovery health channel did a multiple part story on British women who sought Labia surgery for a variety of reasons. For one thing it was found to be very a painful surgery. It was in most cases done outpatient in the doctors office. Most of the women who had it done felt if they had to do it all over again they would never have had it done in the first place as the results even when successful were not pleasing in looks or sensation.

If your wondering what a guy will think about how your vagina looks? As a guy I can tell you looks of a vagina are the last thing guys even think about. As someone married to a women with a large labia I can tell you it is a plus factor for me when we have sex both oral and intercourse.

From my perspective I would never ask my wife or would I want her to consider having any type of labia surgery. As long as you are not being caused any type of discomfort I see no reason to consider cosmetic surgery on your labia and I believe you will have a hard time finding a doctor to perform this surgery at your present age or when your 18.

HIPAA protects a patients privacy (even if they are a minor). It's there is allow young people to get information from their doctors without their parents interference, and to make their own choices based on doctors recommendations, and to protect them if they disagree with their parents over the best course of treatment.

It is not interpreted, by surgeons or by the courts, as applying to purely cosmetic procedures. Its not there so patients can demand whatever kind of medical treatment they want whenever they want, and its not there so 14 year olds can get boobs jobs.

Many surgeons simply won't perform most cosmetic surgeries on minors at all, and only a minority will do so with the parents permission.

It opens them up to too much liability, not to mention, as Ninja said, all surgery comes with risks and complications, and those complication can be worse if you are younger and not physically mature.

Even if HIPAA did mean you could keep this sort of surgery secret from your parents (and it doesn't), very, very few doctors would take the risk of going against your parents wishes, and drawing the negative attention of their professional regulators, by performing this sort of surgery on you.

You'll need your mothers approval if you wish to do this as a minor, and you'll need a doctor who will agree to do it.

Regardless of whether or not HIPAA applies to you, you're not going to be able to hide it from your mother.

Labiaplasty is a surgery, and has its challenges. You would need lots of post-op rest and care, and it would be really hard to keep your parents from noticing that you're not walking for 2 days after the fact. Also keep in mind that it may not be covered by insurance since it's typically cosmetic in nature (unless it's causing you serious physical pain), and so you'd need to find a way to pay for it, which most 15 year olds would have trouble doing on their own.

If you are really concerned, try talking to your mom about it. Chances are you got your larger labia from somewhere genetically, and she'll understand what you're going through.

Be prepared for her to tell you that you're fine just the way you are, though, because women come in all shapes and sizes. What you think of as abnormally large is likely just another in the spectrum. Going based off the adult industry is misleading, just like assuming that anyone over a size 2 is abnormally large because every woman you see in the media is around this range. We're all different.

If you're worried about guys having a problem with it, any guy who is going to make nasty comments doesn't deserve what he's getting. A decent guy will love you and your bits. Heck, some guys even prefer larger labia. So unless it's causing you physical pain, I would suggest against it at least until you're over 18.
