it can also mean you don't know what you have until it's gone, you don't realize how good something was until it's over. if it's meant to refer to a relationship then you can apply it to that. it's the best relationship you ever had but you took it for granted and didn't realize how special it was until it was already over.

Exactly what he said is exactly what it means. In a broken down version of it even more basically he's saying you guys had something special, but either you guys weren't hanging out alot or he thought you guys slacked off after you approved of the relationship. It wasn't what you guys thought it will be and it started going the wrong way once you guys started dating. Basically you guys have something real, but you guys never noticed it to it was gone.
