Question Posted Wednesday January 18 2012, 7:34 am
Hi, my bf and i are planning to have sex and we are both very cautions about our decision and hence decided to take this safely. I wanted to know:
1) which birth pills should i take - the best quality ones?
2) How often should i take the birth pills?
3) Do birth pills affect the periods?
4) Is it safe - are there any side affects?
Any information on the birth control pills would be great!
Thx

Erinn_the_bamf answered Wednesday January 18 2012, 6:21 pm: You will have to meet with either a doctor or go to planned parenthood in order to get birth control. Your doctor will probably prescribe you Loestrin24fe or Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. These are the two lowest dose birth control pills, and they are commonly given to women taking the pill for the first time. You have to take the pill everyday. Your period will often be shorter and lighter. Birth control is safe, but there's risk of stroke, heart attack, or blood clots, however, this is more common in women who smoke or are over 35 years of age. You might find some non-life threatening health issues associated with your birth control like weight gain, chronic yeast infections, or loss of sex drive. Talk to your doctor about switching the brand of birth control if this occurs. [ Erinn_the_bamf's advice column | Ask Erinn_the_bamf A Question ]
lovealways1221 answered Wednesday January 18 2012, 6:04 pm: 1) the type of birth control pill depends on how your body reacts to the drug. I know that when i get my period, I am very moody and break out with acne.. so my doctor prescribed me a birth control brand specifically for that :) Ask your doctor and they should ask you some questions and they will prescribe you the right kind for your body.
2) Depends on what type of birth control you have. For the pill.. most of them you have to take every day. Other forms of birth control is the depo shot which is a shot (is painful) and protects you for 5 or 10 years i think. There's the patch, which you have to wear and change it every week.
3) Yes birth control pills affect your period. In my opinion, it affects it in a positive way. I noticed that my period was a lot lighter, I had less symptoms of PMS, and now I know the exact day I'm getting my period :)
4) yes it is safe.. but not 100%. there are always side effects.. it does not protect you against pregnancy 100% which is why most people use condoms too. If birth control wasn't "safe" they wouldn't be available to us today.
