(1) The ancient Mayans themselves didn't believe the world would end that year; they just figured that was when it was time to start a new calendar. It would be like saying that the world will end on December 31st of 9999 because our years only have four digits. Clearly, that's absurd.
(2) Even if they did think the world would end when their calendar concluded, why should we think that they knew what they were talking about? They clearly didn't have all the answers; if they did, it wouldn't be an ancient and extinct civilization, it would be alive and well and running the world right now!
Someday, the world will end. That is a fact. It may happen five billion years from now when the Sun's hydrogen fuel is exhausted, or it may happen tomorrow if a huge asteroid strikes the Earth (and it's EXTREMELY unlikely that we would get no warning of such an event, so don't be worried about that either!). But rest assured that the end of the world will definitely NOT happen due to some arbitrary date on an ancient calendar. [ Xenolan's advice column | Ask Xenolan A Question ]

Ideas and fake things like that spread very quickly in modern times. Then its used to make money, by exaggerating the idea and making books and movies to make money from it. There are many possibilities. Natural disasters and strange phenomena have been going on since the beginning. Humans have come close to extinction a few times in the far far past. Eunice101 answered Sunday August 21 2011, 12:11 am: The Earth is not going to end in 2012, but scientific studies have said that the only way the world can end, is when the sun explodes. Which is about 5 billon years from now. The reason for this is because the sun will have to much hydrogen fuel, that in that due time, the core of the sun will not be able to hold it's weight, this means it will collapse and will expand. Since I didn't believe at first, i went online and did some research, it's 100% true. [ Eunice101's advice column | Ask Eunice101 A Question ]
DearAbby92 answered Saturday August 20 2011, 11:20 pm: People have been 'predicting' the world's end for years. Remember Y2K? Maybe you weren't alive then, but in 1999 a lot of people thought the world would end then because our computers weren't programmed to change to 2000. Well, not only did the world NOT end, technology has advanced enormously. We went from chunky desktop computers with dial up internet to wifi and I-pads.
The world was actually supposed to end a few months ago, as said by some conspiracy theory christians. We're still here.
