That means he is just shy, and afraid you don't like him. I would tell the friend that you would really like to talk to your crush yourself, and that you would like to go on a date with him. (maybe give the friend your phone number to give to your crush?) Don't let the friend get too involved, there are always complications when you involve a middle man.
