Good ideas for a talent show are:
A song (boring...)
A play (how long is this play gonna take...)
An Act (please...)
But the best of all is all of them put together. I once saw one performed by a group of teenagers. It was a tragic song, but one of the girls was singing, and the others where dancing to it in a sort of dramatic way, they used lots of dramatic technique. It was the most beautiful piece I ever saw. This would totally win the talent show.

The key to a talent show is to be fearless. Put yourself in to the mindset of the attendees:

They will be sitting down to watch a number of performances that showcase all kinds of talents that range from the hilarious to the ridiculous. Each of those performers have at some point or another started by doing something that some people thought was catchy but others probably doubted. My brother, for example, plays the violin, which I can't stand on its own, but I know he plays it well and he plays for other people.

So what do you do? What would you like to do? Think of a talent show not merely as a way of expressing a skill that you know you have, but also as a way of discovering a talent you've never explored.

Some performances do tend to get ignored, but have a wide appeal. I puppeteer, for example, and while it's easy to flick a TV on to watch Sesame Street, the true challenge is in performing puppets, with their mouths moving to your words, and their arms gesturing.

Remember, this is an exploration, which means you should go out and explore the skill before you finish building a show around it. Cool people watch Youtube videos of other performers so they can study the techniques of others who are in that field, not simply mimic them.

Of course, puppets is simply one suggestion, and you should really make this a personal exploration that involves yourself and maybe some of your buddies.

Hope that helps.
