Does anorexia disease go away on it's own or do I need a doctor?

Question Posted Saturday January 1 2011, 1:50 pm

I been on what I call a diet for the past 8 months. At first everybody was amazed I lost so much weight so fast but now they always tell me I'm TOO thin. I want to be skinnier and I think I still look FAT. I did a BMI calculator and I'm like a number 15 (the thing said 15.1 actually). I don't eat allot. Somebody told me they think I have a eating disorder called anorexia. I looked it up. I might have that. I haven't got my period in a couple months even. I don't want to be sick? So does it go away on its own or do I need to get medicine? Im kind of confused about what to do? I didnt tell my mom because shes already upset Im still dieting and I dont want her to freak out again on me. What do you think I could do to be normal I guess? Thanks you

Hi

Your weight should be according to your height, that way, you are healthy and not risking anything. Anorexia Nervosa means that you have a lack of desire to eat, it is an eating disorder. If you do want to lose weight, you have to do it in a healthy way- eating lots of fresh fruit and veg and being in a balanced diet containing every nutrients that your body needs to function normally. You said that you have not got your period for a couple of months, and that means that you are not healthy- you're body is not functioning properly because of the lack of nutrients your body gets. Having normal periods every month is essential because it means that you are healthy, unless of course if you are pregnant then its normal for it to be late.

You should seek help from your doctor/nutritionist, go to a clinic with your mum to discuss your problem, she is just worried about you because she loves you and she can see that you are not well. The main three treatments that you'd go through would be
1) Restoring the person to a healthy weight;
2) Treating the psychological disorders related to the illness;
3) Reducing or eliminating behaviours or thoughts that originally led to the disordered eating.

I myself is trying to lose weight, but lets just say that im eating my way to be skinny- making sure i have a balanced diet containing fruits and veg and also getting at least 15 min of exercise everyday to keep active.

What i would do if one of my friend's asked me the same thing is go to a doctor and your mum wants to help all mum's freak out when there daughter's are going through something that is out of there control but you will need to be honset as it is not something you can go through on your own you will need the support and a shoulder to cry on to laugh with and i would say write down was happend since dieting like the fact your period's have stopped so you can hand it to a doctor and if at first you don't want your mum to go to the doctor's with you at the moment then take another family member or a gd friend that you trust then once you have a yes or a no off the doctor then tell her but it would be gd to tell her first as later on you both could feel bad but you do need a doctor and to be honset with yourself that you may have a problem then that will help you wen you got to the doctors I HOPE this has helped you

To answer your question Anorexia does not go away by itself, it requires medical intervention.

I'm not a doctor so I not qualified to make a diagnosis. If I were a doctor there is not enough information here to make a diagnosis. From what you have written and what I know of anorexics I would not call you an anorexic. You do have some of the symptoms but you also realize this is a disease you don't want to deal with and asking for help. A true anorexic would not be writing to us.

My advice is that you see a doctor. It sounds as if you have been on an unsupervised diet, not a good idea. Dieting should always be supervised by your family doctors. So you start by making an appointment to see you family doctor. Tell the doctor of all your concerns, including the ones listed here and make sure to include that your period has stopped.

Let your doctor decide if you are anorexic or not. The doctor will also tell you what your ideal weight should be for you skeletal frame. If your doctor finds you are at your ideal weight or under weight and you still feel you need to lose weight you may be referred to another doctor.

Follow your doctors advice; Anorexia is not a good disease, it can and has killed people as it messes with the bodies electrolytes. If these get out of balance they can cause multiple organ failures which eventually cause death. Make an appointment to see you doctor ASAP and I would also suggest you speak with your mom.

try not to let diagnosises get into your head cuz pretty soon, you're gonna match symptoms of everything. anorexia is not a disease that just "goes away" like the common cold. it's a psychological disorder basically. think of it as a form of addiction. your weight is defining how you feel basically, right? just as a drug-addict relies on their substances to determine the way they feel. same concept. sometimes, people need lots of therapy because in almost all cases, it's not even the anorexia that's the real problem; rather, (like a drug-addiction) it's the way you feel about yourself and the way you think. you can always go to a nutritionist and get on an actual diet plan rather than doing it yourself. i've had a friend die from literally starving herself because even as she stood 5'3 and 90 pounds, she didn't think she was thin enough. don't be afraid to seek counseling, dont ever feel ashamed about it either.

Anorexia disorder does not go away on its own because it is malneurishment. You really do need a doctor. They don't make medicine really for actual anorexia but they can give you small doses of liquid foods to help you get back to your normal eating habits and also pills to give you all the vitamins you will need. If you are very bad you will need to be hospitalized, but don't worry, they will help you AND save your life because anorexia is very life threatening. Anyways, you also need to speak with a counselor because I am sure you are not fat if people are telling you that you are too skinny. Everyone is beautiful. Show your curves girl not your ribs. :) good luck..
