I'm 16/F and my mother is 53. She's recently started losing handfuls of her hair, which was already thin to begin with and she's freaking out that it might be the water or her health.
Well, I am also losing my hair after I take showers. I lose big handfuls of it, but my hair is super thick and dark, so it's not even noticable, not as much as hers. I shower about every other day and she showers every day. I use a teatree shampoo special for dandruff and my mother uses suave. Is she just freaking out and is my shampoo messed up? Or is it the shower? I need help because my mom is a super spazz!

The particular ingredient you both would want to avoid is sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, better known as SLS. Studies have shown that using products that contain SLS ingredients may cause hormonal imbalances and disturbances that create a hair loss, which may or may not be reversible by the time the problem is noticed.
The SLS can react with the chlorine in water and cause more impact on the body absorbing harmful toxins that are within the water treatment process, leading to even further issues regarding hormonal disturbances and premature hair loss of the scalp.
With your mother aging and her hormones already fluctuating as she enters the latter portion of her adulthood she may experience greater symptoms than you or younger people. You also want to avoid parabens, since they pretty much do the same thing, but I've found it very hard to find a good shampoo that doesn't have either. What I will list below doesn't have either harmful toxin though so if you do choose to purchase the products then they are about as safe as they come from what I have found.
I recommend switching shampoos to something with less toxins. I found Beauty Without Cruelty a great line that doesn't typically contain SLS. The rosemary, mint, and tea tree shampoo (green bottle) would probably be something you would be interested in. Personally, that kind is my favorite in the BWC brand.
They also have volume plus shampoo, daily benefits, moisture plus, and a lavender smelling one. Their conditioner is pretty good, too, but I do prefer to use Pomegranate Sunflower conditioner by Nature's Beauty or Aussie's three minute miracle.
I made the switch about two years ago now and have been very glad to see the overall improvement of my hair health. It's more manageable, shinier, and a lot softer. My thin hair has stopped thinning so much and I've been fairly pleased with it, overall.
I purchase the products on VitaCost for cheaper prices. The shipping is like $4.99 for any amount you purchase.
Beauty Without Cruelty Rosemary Mint and Tea Tree Shampoo:
The more SLS you use on your body, the more you may end up noticing hormonal imbalances and hair loss, usually on your head, unfortunately. So, sometimes even body wash and soap can contribute to the problem since some of the ingredients are absorbed by the body. I would consider making the change to something more natural. I use a tea tree body wash by Desert Essence and have great results on getting clean but leaving my skin to become balanced naturally.
This is what it is:
Desert Essence Castile Liquid Soap with Organic Tea Tree Oil:
And I put it in a little container and squirt a little out on my pouf during my usual daily shower. I also like one by Giovanni that smells like really delicious sweets. It is:
And, of course, I do agree with the user below who suggested your mother take a daily vitamin. You should too, though, for overall optimal health. I could suggest brands as well but I'll leave that up to you so I don't bombard you with so many products at once ;) [ Peeps's advice column | Ask Peeps A Question ]

Razhie answered Friday October 22 2010, 4:42 pm: You are perfectly normal. Thick, long hair sheds. A lot.
Your mother is likely just aging (or, spazzing for no reason at all). Have some sympathy and listen to her spazz. Getting old is scarry. It's unlikely her shampoo or the water is doing anything. She should get some advice from her salon, or from her doctor if her hair is getting noticeably thinner. There may be better shampoos or styling tools for her.
