Is it bad for me to eat the ice-tea powders? do I have a problem?

Question Posted Saturday September 11 2010, 5:00 pm

Okay well my Mom has caught me eating those powders you put into your drink. I know it's gross but to me it's sooo delicious! But Im not sure it's to healthy. I used to have the lemonade stuff but the nestea stuff that comes in the bucket thingy is way better. Do i have a problem? Should I be concerned about this? How will eating the powders affect my health?

Believe it or not, this can be considered a form of pica.

From Wikipedia:

"Pica is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive (e.g. metal [coins, etc.], clay, coal, soil, feces, chalk, paper, soap, mucus, ash, gum, etc.) or an abnormal appetite for some things that may be considered foods, such as food ingredients (e.g. flour, raw potato, raw rice, starch, ice cubes, salt). In order for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally inappropriate."

I would definitely try to curb this craving and speak with your doctor about this because it is not healthy. Consuming powdered drink mixes do a world of harm to you body. Think about it:

If you mix 2 teaspoons per 16 ounces of water then what must that do your body undiluted?

It mixes with your inner mucus membranes, blood, and bodily fluids.

Not good.

These products were not meant to be consumed in the powdered form at all.

Speak with your doctor about getting referred to a behaviorist or someone local that knows about these odd eating disorders and cravings. You should get this worked out. The sooner, the better.

I recently read about a woman who was addicted to eating baking soda because of her pica. She would eat it by the spoonful and loved it. She tried to stop but the cravings were too strong. She confessed to her doctors and they worried about her liver, apparently. Baking soda, for the most part, is considered to be pretty harmless. Think about what it takes to make these sorts of powdered drink mixes and what it must be doing to your body if something considered harmless can turn out to harm the liver if eaten in large quantities.

Yes, this can affect your health negatively.

Yes, there is a problem.

Yes, this is not normal.

Yes, you have a problem.

Talk with some therapists, doctors, and professionals about this and try to get this solved. Many times pica is brought on by something the body is lacking severely (many times iron, actually). A doctor can run a simple blood test and see if you're pretty low on something crucial.

Well as you can guess it's not too healthy. Powder drinks have tons of chemicals and sugar. That said if you do it in moderation (and brush your teeth to avoid cavities) It's not less healthy than eating tons of candy.

Ease up and leave it as a treat.
