Advanced classes versus academic

Question Posted Monday April 5 2010, 10:42 pm

I've heard that universities favour higher marks in the academic classes for science rather than an average mark in the advanced classes, is this mostly true? And does anyone know why?

Someone who excels in a normal class tries hard to do it, someone in an advanced class with low grades is either not looking for the help they need or not caring.

Because if you take a harder class and do poorly, it means you are a bad judge of your own abilities. Sure there could be other reasons, but that's how they would see it. It depends though, my high school and college had a sort of relationship, where certain advanced classes would be weighted the same as AP classes. If you get a B in an advanced science class its likely to be seen as quite similar to an A- in a regular class, however your GPA and SAT scores will likely be the very first thing the admissions board looks at.
