College Meal Plans?

Question Posted Monday April 5 2010, 11:08 pm

I'm working on finalizing my acceptance to college and one of the questions is about which meal plan I want.

There are two plans I'm deciding between.
They are both the same price.
One offers nine "meals" per week, one offers 14.
The one with nine meals gives me a higher dining allowance (basically I can buy anything on campus and at affiliated restaurants).

I'm looking mainly for people who have been to college or know people who have... did you use all of your meals each semester?
Am I better off getting the 9 meal a week plan, and buying a couple at the end of each semester if I run out?
Or will I use 14 meals a week? Did you?

The school won't let meals carry over... they expire. So I'd lose meals I don't use by the end of each semester.

P.S. I'm NOT worried about liking the food. It's one of the top rated dining halls in the country!

It also depends on your class times. For example, last semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays I only have one class, which was at 1:30. So I slept all the way to 1:00, woke up, went to class. So I was sleeping through breakfast and lunch, which were meals I was not using and was thus saving. Basically, it's going to take some time to work out the kinks of what exactly is best for you. And if they both cost the same, you luckily won't be losing money. So choose one, and if it doesn't work out, just change it in second semester.

It depends on your eating habits. Do you usually eat breakfast? Do you want to eat breakfast? How often do you plan on going home? Those all play in. I personally do not eat breakfast and have a 10 meal a week plan. So that's enough for lunch and dinner Monday-Friday, and then going out somewhere else on Saturday and Sunday for food. Or going out for a meal on a weekday to save one for the weekend.

I don't have experience with this particular type of plan. Mine was on a dollar basis (so you paid for food with your meal plan account)

One thing to take into consideration; are you planning on staying over the weekends or going home?

9 meals won't take you very far unless you plan on going home. That would do 4.5 days of 2 meals a day, meaning you'd pretty much need to go home or cook your own meals 2 days a week.

With the 14 meal plan, you can get a full week's worth of meals other than breakfast and lunch.

Hello :)

For the record, I go to college, but don't dorm. So I have no experience with the meal plans. But assuming that you'll be like every other college student, you will be too busy to eat lol. Depending on how many classes you will be taking, and how long they are, your need for meals will vary. Breakfast is important, lunch is important, and dinner as well. So lets say you eat breakfast at 9 am, lunch by 1 PM, and dinner around 6 PM. As a college student, you'll have plenty of organization to do. Studying for exams, typing papers, doing projects, and so on. So I would go with the 14 meals, just to be safe. But, if you're not much of a hungry person, you can go with the nine meals.

If you were to get the 14 meals a week, that means you eat twice a day. I would get the 14 meals a week plan.

Then again, with the 9 meals, you can buy anything on campus. A quick snack between classes. That's fine too. I usually eat a croissant with juice in the morning, a small sandwich in the afternoon, and a fulfilling dinner lol. So it's all on you. Sorry if I couldn't help much haha. Good luck!
