2. Write fanfic. Harry Potter, Avatar, Twilight, whatever. Put your stories up for people to read and review. People (some of them professional copy editors and teachers) will volunteer to proofread, critique and help you improve your writing. Fanfic helps you improve your characterization and plotting, and it's just plain fun. Here's an article by Cory Doctorow about fanfic: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
3. Read. Read everything you can get your hands on, whether trash or high-end literature. The more reading you do, the more you will see how various writers handle various issues and conflicts. [ Ignatz's advice column | Ask Ignatz A Question ]
Lola answered Wednesday March 17 2010, 3:05 pm: You should read more books, but not cheesy stories, more like novels and literature and you should also read the news paper, and read about politics and about history, you have to be knowledgeable in different aspects. And maybe you could join some kind of workshops or courses about writing and there are websites for young writers and people actually read your things and rate you and some of these people are experienced writers and authors, so they give you tips and stuff.

SarcasticGreetings answered Tuesday March 16 2010, 8:37 pm: > Spell better. Learn how to write in proper English. It may be a pain in the ass, but a story writn omg lyk dis really SLOWS down reading. Poor grammar hurts your story, as well. Read more books and stories. This may .. help good grammar seep in more.
The only exception to this is a character's speech; if you want the reader to get a certain impression of a character, you can help generate that impression through the way you have them speak.
In V for Vendetta, V had a HUGE vocabulary. The rest of the characters... not so much. From this, one can infer that V is far more intelligent than the citizens, that he knows what he's doing, etc.
In Shakespeare's Othello, Iago does not speak in iambic pentameter (neither do certain characters in A Winter's Tale). This implies that Iago is an IDIOT.
> Be original. Be creative. Nobody wants to read a story with a plot they've heard at least 50 times before.
> Be creative. This doesn't mean you have to make up everything and make everything weird. Just find a way for your stories to stand out and be unique. This applies to characters, as well; make sure they'r enot just humans with names. They need a personality and characteristics.
> BE CREATIVE.
> Don't be afraid to incorporate your personal life experiences into your stories. The author Charles Bock based many of his characters on people he knew. In his novel Beautiful Children, Bing was based entirely on Bock's older brother. And the whole pawn shop chapter was based on Bock's childhood experiences (a family member of his owned a pawn shop, as well).
> Leave your reader with something to think about. No matter how long a story is, it should bring something to the table. Even stories like The Golden Key ([Link](Mouse over link to see full location)) leave the reader off with SOMETHING.
