Studying

Question Posted Sunday January 31 2010, 11:10 am

Lately I have been feeling like I'm dumber than a normal 15 year old should be. I have started watching Criminal Minds lately and I am fascinated with Spencer Reid and how genius he is. So, it got me thinking how cool would it be if all of my friends turned to me for help on their homework or helping them study for a test. However, before that happens I need to improve in school, myself. So, in conclusion, does anybody have studying techniques I could use? I tried reading a passage as studying but that does not help because I just forget the next day. Something along the lines of flashcards or something like that. One last thing. I feel like I could be better if I concentrated more. So can someone help me with listening in class, like what should I do, put every single distracting item away because that seems almost to easy. So, study techniques that help me remember the important items for a test? Ways to do my homework correctly and not get stressed? Lastly, ways to concentrate better in school? Thanks so much!

Hey, I'm only 14, but I've had to go through a lot of stress with homework-I'm in the marching band and I don't have a lot of homework or study time.
To remember what I've read after I've studied, I read through a few sentences and then rephrase them in my head in my own words. And I'm careful to look up anything I don't completly understand.
To pay attention, you're right, you need to put away anything distracting. Personally, I'll put everything away rthat isn't on that particular subject. If its paying attention in class, always take notes, even if they are just quick words that can help you later. Also, most teachers will talk with emphasis when they are pointing out something important. Also, feel free to ask your classmates questions about things you didn't understand, as well as your teacher.
To get homework done, I spread it out during the week and work on a little each day so I'm not cramming. And I'm attentive to due dates. You should also try to organize your homework by importance and length, And do the most important and shortest lengthed first. And, as you should do in class, put away anything that doesn't have to do with that subject. It can trick yourself into thinking you don't have as much to do, and it will stop you from worrying about the next part of your homework you have to finish.
To remember things for a test, think of words that will trigger important facts. Also, try to fit lists of items into a silly sentence, like "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally".

I know of a couple of things that could help, first of all, you do need to be in a room that is quiet, one without distractions (visual or audio) when you study.

Another thing you might try when you read your materials is to read aloud to yourself, this way you have to say the words and you get to listen to yourself say these words, thus adding more physical processes to your learning experience, this will help engage your brain more into what you're doing.

You might try also reading short articles about your favorite subjects that include pictures or illustrations, it's a scientific fact that some people (men more often than women) learn better from these visuals. I have ADD and I learn much better from "touching" and seeing than from just hearing.

I also love to write important factual notes, this gives you more visuals and even more thought engaging processes. I hope this helps! Todd the Gem Guy

every day after school 5 minutes per subject read over what you did in class, in class stare at the teacher and put your goal in your mind, for studying always start before 1 night before the test, when you notice the chapter is coming to and end , or if a teacher anounces test or quis and say this will be on it, write it down. to study sing a song of your definitions and make your information into an adventure like read your notes in an accent if it is science reaed it like a snooty brit, or if you are learning about rome read it in an roman accent, another one is the game show study system have one friend quiz you and go against aqnother friend and have a battle to see who will get the most points, this will help you get this info in your head I hope I helped.
