is left for dead an online game only????

i just want to ask a simple question...is left for dead 2 only an online games ???i mean can i play it even if i don't have an internet connection at my hand??? single player only???? and if u can please suggest me some really good games which i can play on my laptop with quite high hardware.....some cool games which have some future weapons like warhead crysis.... and a couple of strateg games too with old fashiones troops with bow arrow and swords...like praetorians etc.plz help.....
