what Kind of schooling do i need for this? any reccomendations?

Question Posted Friday August 14 2009, 3:48 pm

I am a Sophmore at East High School in Duluth, MN. Since I've started High School I've been asked the same question over and over.

"What kind of schooling are you going to do?"
"What career do you want to part take in?"

And recently i've figured out what I want to do. I want to go somewhere tropical on the ocean and get a Boat with a couple bedrooms, kitchen, living space, bathroom, ect. and Start a business to Charter people out on a boat and take them places they want to go on their vacation, and tour them around and they decide what they want to do for the day/ week/ or however long they wish to stay.

My questions are
-What kind of schooling do I need for this?
-Where should I go?
-How can I obtain this "Dream Boat"?
-Where can I find more answers to my Questions?

I would recommend that you take college courses in hospitality, and hotel management. Some of the course won't apply, but some will. They will focus on resort and high end get away spots for the very rich. You'll learn about managing a resort type business, managing employees, food and catering and finding or attracting customers. Then of course you'll need a sea pilots license like the other person recommended. There is a lot to making your own business successful. Not just the desire to have your own business. But the smarts to make the right decisions at the right time on when to invest, when and where to advertise and even to determine what kind of customer you are looking for. You don't want to market to the wrong people.
All in all your idea sounds wonderful. Be patient, work towards your dream and don't ever loose site of your goal.
Oh and signing on to be a ship hand for a year on a boat just like the one you hope to own some day is the best way to get on the job training.
If you donate your time in exchange for experience, I am sure you'll find someone who is willing to take you on as a helper.
Check out the internet. Look for luxury charter boats, you'll find plenty. Narrow it down to an area like Hawaii, then contact them and offer your services for one year in exchange for training.
I envy you, sounds like a great life!
good luck

first, in order to do this, you will need your captains sailing license. You have to spend 270 at sea to obtain your license.

after that, Its going to cost you ALOT to buy a "house boat" so I suggest looking into getting a loan for that.

One you have your license, and your boat, you need customers!

move to florida or another tropical location of your choice and start advertising. Get some business cards made, create a website, and get some brochures made to hand out.

hope this helps!! =]
