Hazardous to our health???

Question Posted Tuesday August 11 2009, 1:39 am

Ok

So my fiancé and I live in these apartments. We have lived here for about a year.

The office management advertises a "year round" swming pool, however, it's been open maybe 1 or 2 months total this whole year.

For the past month, the pool has not been touched. It is severely green and puts off a rotten smell. We have to walk by it to check the mail.

I was mad that we haven't ever gotten to swim, but I got over it.

It fiancé and I were talking about it to his parents and they said that a pool in that condition is hazardous to you Health because or airborne toxin and suggested that we call the health department right away.

Are they right? Is this somehong that needs to be acted upon??

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Another thing to consider, depending on where you live: mosquitoes.

Any standing body of water can become a breeding ground. Mosquitoes can carry malaria, encephalitis, and West Nile virus, aside from being annoying. An untended pool is vey much a health hazard. I'd call the board of health.

WEll pools that are not maintained can become full of algea, moss, bacteria, scum, and even frogs. It is starting to turn into a pond. All pools will do this if not maintained. Not necessarily bad for you if you are just walking by. But I wouldn't go in the pool under those circumstances, but if frogs can live in it, then it is not toxic. In fact the chemicals they put in there like chlorine, are more toxic to humans (and frogs) than bacteria and algea are.
The worst thing the pool can do is give off methane gas, and that is probably what you smell. The same stuff that comes out of cows. (and all mammals.)
So no you don't have to report the pool because it is dirty or toxic. You should report it if it is not being properly protected from small children getting access to it. Of course you can complain to management about their not maintaining it for the use of the tenants.
Hope this alleviates your fears.

I would say your fiance's parents are right, and you should call.
The pool shouldn't be green either... There should be a Pool person who comes in every day (or few days) and they look after the pool and keep it in a good condition.
Also, if you have to pay for extras, such as facilities and the up keeping of the pool, you should contact the person in charge etc because that's not on that you have to pay when things aren't getting done.
Good Luck! :)

If it is so bad it is putting off a foul smell than yes I would say it is a health hazard. I would also be ticked off it they were falsely advertizing a pool. It is the apartment complex's job to keep the building safe and clean to all residents and children living in the area. I would personally call the health department and have it checked out it certainly wouldn't hurt.

Well first off, the rent you are paying for your appartment mostlikely includes a cost for the pool, and considering they are false advertising a pool, I would be pretty ticked off. It is very possible that there could be an airborn toxin, depending on the problem the pool has. Even if it isn't hazardous, the smell and not normal look of the pool should be a good enough reason to get to the bottom of what is going on. You most definately have good reason to complain and act upon the issue.
Good luck!!!
