should i tryout?

Question Posted Wednesday August 5 2009, 8:59 pm

hey guys this one is for my friend! she says all her friends are really into sports and she doesn't play any at all. she said she cant go through H.S without doing anything active. so she wants to tryout for cheer leading. she has never done anything like it at all. but she wants to tryout. should i tell her to go for it even if she gets upset because she didn't make it?

You should tell her to try out, because it will be good for her. Even if she doesn't make it, she can at least say she tried her hardest. And she'll have the experience. Just, like columnists below said, prepare her. Let her know that you'll support her whether she makes it or not, but you don't want her to be upset if she doesn't make it. Plus, there are a ton of other things she can try instead.

If she doesn't make it, why not try a club? It's better to be involved in a club than in nothing at all. Just because it isn't a sport doesn't mean it's not good to get into.

I highly recommend joining your school's newspaper. I've been on my school's newspaper all throughout high school and I absolutely love it.

Yes, you should tell her to go for it but before i would have her take classes. my friend who had never cheered before tried out for cheer leading. Of course she didnt make it but then she trained all summer and the next year tried out again and made it. If she is willing to work hard for it then you never know, she might be good.

Yes. Tell her not to get her hopes up too high because there's a chance she may not get a spot on the squad. But, make sure that she believes in herself well enough so that if she does get rejected she's okay.

There are other sports that'll want her as well. She can also try Field Hockey. :)

Well first of all you have to be ok with rejection, that's the first thing you have to tell her. That is one way in which we learn and grow. Ok so with that said, i think she should think about whether or not she likes cheer leading. I mean you can't just try out for it just to do something you have to like it and enjoy it or you will hate it and will not be an asset to the troupe which you need to be. If she likes dance and gymnastics then yeah she should go for it. Also she should see if she likes the girls that are on the squad. If they are nice and they are the kind of people that she would want to be around all day every day then by all means try out. I would have her check out some cheer leading videos on youtube and see how she likes it. Who know's she might be a natural :)
