why is my cat being such a prick about our new kitten?
Question Posted Wednesday July 15 2009, 10:13 pm
I got a new kitten while I already had another cat. She is normally a very sweet girl, and I know that cats don't adapt well to newcoming kittens in the house. I've heard they get the feeling they're being replaced or not getting enough attention.
I've been sure to give her enough attention, I've invited her into my room while the kitten was here (he can't leave my room yet). I've petted her, then as soon as she saw the kitten, she freaked out, hissed and as I tried to comfort her, she scratched me.
I don't understand why she won't adapt; she's been given good attention and is allowed to be in my room - but I don't understand why she's being so bitchy about this to me when I'm trying to comfort her .. maybe it's just that cats don't even realize it?
How much longer may this adaption take? Or may she never like the kitten?

I had a similar experience a few years ago and my cat took a few weeks of "bitchiness" to get used to having a new kitten around. BUT, I got new kitten last year and my adult cat still won't come around the other one and hisses and freaks when he is around and its been over a year. Just keep paying attention to the old cat, let her eat out of her own bowl, make sure she has her own sleeping spot etc. She probably won't want to share anything with the kitten for awhile if not ever. good luck [ person43's advice column | Ask person43 A Question ]
