in july i will be taking a plane to new orleans. ive only been on a plane once before when i was ten, and i was terrified.
recently there have been a lot of planes crashing and i just heard about a pilot dying on board.
im starting to really worry myself, and i was just wondering if there was anything i could do to chill myself out?
i worry way too much and this plane thing is seriously starting to stress me out majorly.
any advice?

my dad is a pilot and was for several years and nothing bad has happened to him. he tells me that there's a greater chance of getting in an accident in a car than on a plane. so trust me, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the view :) [ yourxworthit's advice column | Ask yourxworthit A Question ]

The first two columnists who responded have given you good advice. Staying busy by distracting yourself with other activities is a good way to overcome anxiety.
Flying today is actually safer than driving in a car or crossing the street. What happened yesterday with the pilot dying was a tragic event, but it did not affect the safety of the flight or the passengers. The primary purpose of having two pilots on the flight deck is to share the work load, share their flying experience and in the remote possibility that one of them gets sick or dies there is another pilot there to safely fly the plane.
In today’s modern airplane the pilots themselves are almost a redundancy as the computers do most of the work after wheels up to just a mile from touchdown. In many of today’s planes the plane can actually fly and land itself. What do the pilots do? In flight, in most modern jet liners they monitor systems and confirm navigation. On approach and landing they instruct the planes navigational systems or hand fly the aircraft as directed by Air Traffic Control. On the ground they maneuver the plane as directed by Ground Control.
I did some checking on the web about fear of flying and found a site,

This is a free site that offers an online course in overcoming the fear of flight. It was developed by an Airline pilot. I would suggest you look at the site and go through the course. It may help you overcome your fear. There are other sites, most of which require you to purchase the course. You can find these and other sites by typing “fear of flying into a search engine.
If you have not discussed your fear with your parents I strongly suggested you do so, even if you are traveling as a family. We parents are not the enemy, are job is to look out for your well being which includes making sure you are comfortable in different situations. If your parents are aware of your fear there are things they can do to make sure you are less anxious about this trip.
chakra answered Friday June 19 2009, 6:38 am: I've never been on a plane but i do suffer terribly with anxiety and panic so i can give you some tips to help with that.
Before you go to the airport, have a nice long soak in the bath with some lavander oils or lavander aromatherapy bubble bath. It works a treat!
Deffinately buy some rescue remedy. I take 4 drops on my tonge and it eases panic, it recomends 4 but people do take more.
It's like a miracle in a bottle, all natural so no side effects and safe for any age and even safe for animals.
You can also buy rescue remedy pastilles, you could suck one instead of the sweet they give you to stop your ears popping.
Lavander roll on for your wrists also helps, i put some on and take the rescue remedy at the same time.
I also find something in your hands helps, i use aroma dough [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
its just like though stress balls, or play dough except its got soothing oils in that release for you to breathe in as your squeezing and playing with it.
Take lots of distractions in your carry on bag. If you have/or can borrow a portable dvd player and some dvd's that would be really great. Mine goes everywhere with me.
If you are aloud mp3 on a plane then take one so you dont have to listen to the sounds around you for a bit of escapeism while your reading ect.
Puzzle books are essential for me to calm down because they are a good distraction to take your mind away from the panic so you do calm down.
I find childrens/teens ones are better because they are easier when your brain is all fizzled from the panic. And colourful ones seem more fun and calming than boring black and white books.
Magazines and books are essential too, i find myself reading the most boring stuff, concentrating on ever word just to stop the panic.
Make sure you have a drink of water with you at all times, it helps with the sickness feeling that panic bring.
The chances of being in a plane crash are 1 in 1MILLION and in 90% of those accidents passangers survive. Just incase you are still worried The BBC (very trusted) have some info on how to survive a plane crash

But, try bringing a paper bag. If you have an anxiety attack, hold it around your mouth and breath deeply. The carbon dioxide content will slow your heartbeat back down to normal speeds, because you're getting less oxygen. Also, pretend you're not on a plane. Just sit back and listen to the radio or watch a movie. Bring a handheld game in your carry-on. Something to take your mind off the fact that you're 30,000 feet in the air.
