virus?

Question Posted Friday June 19 2009, 12:44 am

my computer ended up with a virus sometime last fall.. prob around october and november. my computer is still fine for the most part, but is a little slower and freezes more often, and occasionally won't connect to the internet when you want it to. we dont have the money to take it in to get fixed or buy any software right now so we just deal with it.

well i dont know what has happened, but my itunes is gone. as is limewire. when i try to open itunes, it says "this action is only valid for products that are currently installed." and that's as far as i get. i've tried several times to redownload it from apple.com and for awhile it would get allll the way through the download, but the same pop up would still come up, but now it only gets about halfway through the download and it tells me to install quicktime.. but again, it wont let me! limewire wont open after it's downloaded either. all my music is still on my computer, but i can't access it or update my ipod. i'm losing my mind!!!! how can i get my itunes and limewire to work again? i've uninstalled and reinstalled till i'm blue in the face, and still nothing.

also it won't let me connect my camera either, it like won't read it. so if you can help me there, that'd be great, but my main focus is my music. help?

I'll divide my post into a few sections to makes it easier to read, all right?

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

It seems to me that your computer's registry is messed up, and you might have lost several files in your program files folder . . . perhaps some core files are missing, too (but I am not too sure on this).

First, let's make sure that your computer is infected by a virus:

***If you have trouble doing these steps, email or inbox me. I'm trying to keep my post as short as possible here so I won't go into details.

STEP 1) Start your computer in "safe mode with networking."

STEP 2) Go to one of the following two websites and start a scan:

(both are free, no worry)

BitDefender: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
PandaSecurity: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

STEP 3) Did you find the virus? If yes, then you have a few options:

A--Download an anti-virus program and run it. Don't worry, you musics won't be lost. If you don't have one, then I recommend one of the following two:

Avira: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Avast: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

****NOTE: pick ONLY ONE because having multiple anti-virus programs running at the same time would cause them to interfere with each other.

B--If you have a restore point on your computer, then use it. Don't worry, all of your musics will be safe with this method.

C--use the OS CD or DVD and reinstall windows. Careful though, because this method will delete all of your music files.

D--Open command prompt (Start--->Run--->[type in] cmd). In the command prompt, type in "msconfig" (without the quotation marks). Now, un-check the ones that you think are harmful.

Then open task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), and kill the processes that you think are harmful.

Now reboot your computer in "safe mode" (no networking this time).

In safe mode, delete all suspicious files. Then open command prompt and type in "sfc/scannow" to activate System File Checker. This will repair all corrupted system files of yours. (ALl of your musics are safe with this method.)

===============================================
SUGGESTION

What is your computer's OS (operating system)? Is it Windows XP, Windows Vista, or something else? Do you have the original OS CD or DVD? Do you have a backup disc? Have you ever created a restore point?

If possible, I suggest that you re-post this question and include the above information. We could explain the paths that you could take to solve this whole problem in more detail with those information.

===============================================
TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN

In the future, you should install an anti-virus software to help protect your computer. If you don't want to spend money, then I recommend you to use one of these:

Avira: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Avast: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Both are FREE--that's right, "free" as in "no cost"--anti-virus softwares. But PICK ONLY ONE because having multiple anti-virus programs running at the same time would cause them to interfere with each other.

Hope this helps,

If I were you I wouldn't trust free anti-virus software. It's usually ad-ware itself. What I would do is a system recovery. When the computer is starting up press either F10 or F11. It depends on what computer you have, but I believe for most computers it's F10 or F11. If not try the other function(F#) keys.

EDIT: You asked me if this would delete your music files.
If it functions like a normal computer, it won't delete any files. It only deletes programs, which may be easily re-installed.
If your music files aren't saved to the hard drive, but they're saved to Limewire or i-Tunes they will be deleted. If you have an MP3 player or some blank CDs save the music to those, and when you do the system recovery just upload(rip) them from the CD/MP3. Then you'd have it on your computer and an external file.

EDIT: I checked my computer, and as the computer is starting up you can either wait or it gives you have to other options. Choose fast and press F12.

Download AVG. It's a free anti-virus program:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Also download and install Ad-Aware to search for any spyware:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

and for good measure, try to get Spybot too:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

They're all FREE maintenance programs to rid or quarantine your computer of viruses and spyware.

I don't know how bad your computer's virus situation is exactly, but hopefully those will be enough to help.
