Is anemia related to cancer?

Question Posted Thursday June 11 2009, 1:51 am

I am so scared! My mom just was diagnosed with anemia which is loss of red blood cells or something like that and she is going to get more blood tests done. I was reading some causes of anemia and one of them listed on a website was cancer. Do you think my mom has cancer if she has anemia? I mean, is it a rare thing that anemia comes from cancer or is it very, very common to be anemic because you have cancer? Confused.

I know a lot of people that are anemic, and none of them have cancer. It has to do with their vegetarian/vegan/redmeatless diets.

If she has cancer they will find out in the blood tests, but no being anemic does not mean you automatically get cancer. Im anemic and it means that you dont have enough iron in your blood and it can be really bad. The doctors will tell your mom what the best thing to do about it is. There are pills and there are diets to help this.

Hope i helped =]

It's true that cancer is one way to explain anemia, but there are a lot of other causes for anemia as well. Some people have it as a genetic condition (like myself), while others have it as a result of their diet and still others have it for other health reasons. It could have been something that she's had for her entire life that was just never diagnosed, or it could have just come up. Nothing to worry about until more blood tests are done.

I'm anemic and I don't have cancer.

The reason I became anemic was because I was a vegetarian. Not eating meat + being a super picky eater = disaster.

Your mom will most likely be fine. She should get some vitamins fortified with extra iron to help with the fatigue and weakness, etc. That's what I did and I feel much better :)

It is a hard question to answer because you ant have all types of anemia and there are certain symptoms they share or are different to each types. There is a bend your moms red blood cells which doesn't give your organs enough oxygen. The doctors like you said are testing her blood cells to see what type it is and how it has affected her body. She could not had enough iron or vitamin so you have to wait and see what type of anemia it is which can be or not related to cancer. Just relax because your mother needs support now.

Anemia is caused by not having enough iron in the blood so you tend to be cold, and sleepy a lot. It can be caused by cancer, but I think your mom should be okay.

My mom has anemia too. It's more common in women mainly because of our menstrual cycles and such. It's a pretty common thing so I wouldn't worry too much. I'm pretty sure your mother will be okay. Don't read too much into websites because they'll only scare you and make you paranoid. If you want a site with the facts, go to WebMD.

There you go. Read up on it. It should clear up a few things. The more you know.. :)
