Once they're out in the open, you can sort them out better than when they're jumbled in your head. Plus you have a third party that can help you plan a course of action to make the problem better. Sometimes you can't see a situation or the solution to a problem when you're actually involved in the situation. A third party can see things how they really are and let you know what everyone's point of view is.

Talking about problems out loud or writing about it in a journal can also help you organize your thoughts on the situation and sometimes you can come to an epiphany or realize something you haven't before when you do. If you repeat the problem long enough you feel better getting it out of your system and whoever you are confessing to can help console you =] [ hotpotato's advice column | Ask hotpotato A Question ]

For example: My friend and I got into a HUGE argument last year and it would have never been resolved if we didn't talk things out. We would probably still be angry at each other and miss all the fun times we had from then til now.
So, talking about your problems really does help you. It just depends on who you talk to. It would help if you talked to someone who is full of advice and listens well. Someone who is also trustworthy.
