Question Posted Tuesday April 14 2009, 10:07 pm
I am filling out job applications online...for my first job..and i was wondering if i should call the places after about a week or so to know if they received my application.
also HOW DO I FILL ONE OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE..
do i email it to them or what?
Im very new at this and am not receiving much help from my parents about this so here are some questions
1. what should i do to have myself noticed
2.should a fill out applications to more then 1 place
3.SHOULD I CALL AFTER WARDS
4.Any tips you have for me
5. How do i fill out an online application
6.do i need to fill out a resume..if i want to apply at jobs like target...and chuck e cheese..even if this is my first job..
2. Definitely fill out more than one application because sometimes they don't call you until they have opening even if they say they are hiring. This way you have multiple options to choose from
3. actually call between 3-5 days after filling one out because it shows that you care, your responsible, and has ambition.
4. Be calm in the interviews, pretend like you are just talking to a regular person, and answer all questions honestly but with common sense. Obviously if you have stolen in your life, you wouldn't admit that in an interview.
5. Number one tip- when they ask do you have questions, make sure you have some. This is the number one reason why people don't get hired. This shows that if you truly don't understand something then you will ask questions.
6. Online applications are very simple but paper ones are more likely to be read. Computers have a tendency to fail, corrupt, the file can be sent elsewhere, they may have a virus, and you can't attach resumes to them.

Try going to each of their websites and see if there is a link about employment or careers. Thats where the online applications would be. If there is nothing on the website like that, then you would need to go there in person to apply.
Job applications are just basic information about your self, your schooling, and your work experience. Soemtimes they will have questions like what would set you apart from other candidates and things like that. For those types of questions just be honest. If your an outgoing person, tell them that. If your a fast learner, tell them that. If you work well under pressure, tell them that. Just think about the skills that you have that an employer would like.
In reply to the questions that you listed:
1. I wouldnt worry to much about make yourself stand out on an application. Like I said, applications are just factual information about yourself.
2. I wold fill out applications for more than one place because its not definate that you will be hired by the first place you apply to. And that way, you have options of more than one business calls you back for an interview.
3. When I was applying for my first job, I called about 3-4 days after I put in the application to make sure they got it. All i said to them was " Hi, my name is ________ and I submitted an application on ________ and I was just calling to make sure it was recieved and see what the status of it is." Doing that makes them see that you are serious about the job and you can also find out of they even looked over if or if the position was already filled.
4. My only tip is to be yourself. People can tell when a person is being fake and you dont want to start off on the wrong foot.
5. Already answered above.
6. You do not need a resume since its your first job. You only need a resume when its a more serious position and you have previous work experience. [ elw5039's advice column | Ask elw5039 A Question ]
