Cutting

Question Posted Thursday March 5 2009, 7:57 pm

If you cut does that mean your emo? Like the stereotypical type? I'm in 9th grade and I've cut since 8th grade. Not all the time but I do when something goes wrong and I break down. I'm only 14 and none of my family has ever found out about it. Only some of my friends saw. What am I supposed to do? I'm usually unhappy and stuff and I hate it at home. But I can handle everything better at school than at home although I hate school too. I've thought I needed help a few months ago because of what I've thought but didn't really think I'd ever do it. I know this might have been stupid but I really don't know what to do anymore. Help?

Lots of us feel really down sometimes and we feel there is no where to go.
You have already used your brain to answer this question.
You can handle everything better at school. Does this mean you have people there you can trust?
Use these people to help and try writing down your issues.
Once you have done this (HONESTLY) find a member of staff at school that you feel you can trust, have a discussion but set some boundaries of con fidence. Remember that any breach of law may cause these boundaries to be broken,
Good luck and trust in your friends and your staff!

it doesnt mean your emo. i started cutting when I was 10 and i didnt even know what 'emo' was until 7th grade. I'm 15 now and its an everyday battle to not do it. If I had stopped years ago then It would have nade it so much easier. my parents found out the hard way and tried forcing me into therepy. 3 years later ive gotten really good at hiding y depression and I was so badly to tell them that im not okay. please tell someone now as opposed to later. if you need tips on how to break it to them just msg me or something<333

It's hard being in this state of mind when you feel depressed and aren't sure what there is to doo about it. I went through this for years and I am a recovered cutter as well. First of all I have to say that you need to stop cutting. NOW. It is physically draining and in the long run is very unhealthy for your body and mind. You CAN become addicted to cutting which is why I recommed you stop as soon as possible. You can become addicted because when you inflict harm on yourself the body with automatically release endorphins in your brain. Endorphin is a chemical in your brain that numbs pain and enduses a state of bliss. There are many safer ways to release these endorphins.
If you think you need help then you need to seek out help. If you feel comfortable then tell your family about it. If not then when you go to your next doctor check-up ask him/her if you can talk about your feelings and your fears of possibly having depression. It may be just a phase in your life of you could have a chemical imbalance in your brain. I personally have chronic depression(depression cause by a chemical imbalance that never goes away) that I treat with meds and regular therapy sessions.
If you think you will be unable to quit cutting on your own then ask for help from the friends that know that you cut.
When you feel like you are on the brink of a break-down then turn on loud music, draw or paint, write, exercise, do something creative, scream into a pillow, punch a stuffed animal or pillow, take a shower, or a bubblebath. If you feel like you need a burst on endorphins to lift you up then exercise, yoga, and doing something active are all things that will release endorphins in your brain.
If you would like to talk with me my email is rosemary13dg@aol.com I am 17/F and I am a peer counceler as well as taking college classes in psychology, and I'm a good listener so feel free to contact me. :]

It's not stupid, so don't say that. Cutting does not mean you are "emo" or any other stereotype. It means that you have some problems to be worked out and need some help. It doesn't mean you're "crazy" or "weird" either. I really hope you talk to your family, or atleast tell your mom or dad (whoever your closest to). They will know what to do. You can't keep this to yourself or handle it all be yourself. You might be doing it right now at bad times, but it could turn into doing it every week to every day. It's better to realize you need to stop early on, so you can get better sooner! If you're close to a teacher or counselor at school, try and talk to them.. they deal with that kind of stuff and can definitely give some direction of what to do. I really hope you stop and realize you're only 14! You're young and things will get better.. you have your wholeeee life ahead of you. Keep your head up and get better :)
