My sister just moved out. Her room was in the basement, and used to be a kitchen so there are cabinets and a sink and a stove. the owner refuses to take it down. I want to make this MY AREA! i plan to put in a futon, tv, maybe my computer and just have it be my "extra" room. The walls are white and the bottom half is light wood. I am not renovating, just redecorating/painting. I want some tips on what color I should paint the top half, the bottom is light stained wood. i want a relaxing but bright tone. It is in the basement with no window! What color do you suggest. Remember warm, inviting color that still brightens up the room?

When there is little outside light.......light is usually right!I suggest looking through home remodeling books, home magazines, etc to find a color that you can see in a photo that looks great to you. Also paint stores or Home Depot have tons of home decorating pamphlets and color samples. Take a cabinet door off the hinges and take it with you to match colors.....or bring samples home. Wallpaper books in these stores also have many pictures of decorated interiors with all kinds of schemes and colors.
You'll find something great that way and maybe get even better ideas for your area!

modelkate11 answered Thursday February 5 2009, 8:57 pm: you say that you want warm colors and light colors, which is hard to get. Maybe an orange-red or a shade of purple. Purple can actually be a warm or cool color depending on what else you put in the room, if you have soft fabrics in the room then it'll come out warm. wood always warms up a room anyway though. you could also use a shade of green.

Ok, I would suggest you put up some mirrors. This helps give the effect a window would by multiplying whatever light you do have. Also, I know you want a bright color, but if you want a more relaxing color, I'd say a rich darker tone might be a bit more calm :) I painted my room a deep redish-purple color, and I love it! It give the room a serious and thoughtful undertone, and it makes the room feel warm, home-ey, and inviting :) I would also suggest getting a lot of scented candles. A warm room is made even better with actual warmth and good fragrants floating around the room. Plus, the mirrors will reflect the candles and make it look great :D
(also, I'd suggest staying away from light cool colors like light blue, light green, or light purple. It gives the room more of a chilly, open air sense, and it sounds like you want more of a warm, inviting area :])
I hope I helped a little bit :)
