guitar help!

Question Posted Tuesday January 13 2009, 6:53 pm

i'm wanting to learn guitar, but I'm left handed. is it possible for me to get a guitar and have people take the strings off and make it into a left handed guitar? and also do you know of any good instructional dvds that are specifically for left handed people on the acoustic guitar?
any other information regarding guitars would be appreciated.

i'm also left handed and i learned how to play the guitar like right handed people do. i think it's pretty cool when left handed people can play it the right hand way. i started two years ago and it's not that hard actually, you'll get used to is. and you should definetly start with acoustic.

Well first off, I would recommend starting on an acoustic because;

1) Most electric's bodies are shaped for right handers so you probably would be better off with an acoustic until you get good enough to invest in a left handed guitar.
2) Acoustic's strings are generally more difficult to press down on so if you get used to them first, it will make it easier to play any kind of guitar you want in the future.
3) It's cheaper because if you get an electric, you also have to buy an amp and whatever else comes with it.

So, go buy a good quality acoustic (My beginner guitar was a Delta, and it is good enough to still be my favorite today. I got it for about $80 at Ben&Jacks) and when you're at the store, ask them if they can restring it to fit your left hand instead. If not, it's rather easy to do it by yourself. Basically, you just take off the strings and then reverse them. I'm sure you can find some tutorials if you type it in on google about re-stringing a guitar.

Well, my brother's left handed and he just taught himself to play. I think when you first get it, it's easier to just play around and experiment with the different sounds you can make then it is to try and play certain songs. You should try to adjust to it before you start learning chords and tabs.

Basically, anything written for the guitar for right hand is just opposite left hand. I bet you could find a good tutorial on youtube if you really need one, but you could always just reverse the tablature.

Also, my favorite website for free tabs and chords is Ultimateguitar.com. It basically has just about any song you want to play haha :)

Hope I helped, if you have any additional questions, you can always email me at Neonconverse@gmail.com :)

There are left-handed guitars available; most music stores have them. It is possible to restring a standard guitar for the left hand: the bridge and nut have to be removed and turned upside down so that the strings are right. This can run into money.

There are two other options: one is to copy Jimi Hendrix and learn to play upside down. The other, if you're reasonably good with simple hand tools, is to make a strumstick (3-string guitar)or cigar-box guitar. There are a number of websites and at least one Yahoo! group devoted to the subject. They're easy to make, easy to play, and if it worked for Muddy Waters and Lightning Hopkins, it'll work for you. If it doesn't work, you're out $10 in materials rather than an expensive acoustic guitar.

Hiope this helps.

Go to a guitar/music store like Sam Ash. I'm sure they can help you with something like that.
