i know this is a long raging battle that's been going on for a long time, but im deciding on which to buy. The most useful answers will obviousely be from people that use either one (you folk :D). Im thinking of buying a laptop, but not sure which one. It'll be used for school work mosly (essays etc) and surfing the internet. any ideas?
The virus arguement is moot. Macs avoid getting viruses not by superior virus-protection but via being too small of a market for virus-makers. Buying a Mac only helps to reverse the predicament. Anyway, the best virus protection you can use is discresion in your internet browsing and downloading, not your choice of operating system.
Anything you're going to have to do for school you can do on a Windows, and as far as surfing the net goes, Windows gives you a bigger choice of browsers (It comes bundled with IE, but FireFox and Opera are both geared more toward Windows, and all three of the above are better than Mac's equivelent, Safari). And if you ever decide to take a break from schoolwork and web-surfing, Windows is pretty much the only choice for gaming. You CAN get games for a Mac from an Apple Store, but they're all ports of games originally developed for Windows. The ports are done by a company called "MacSoft", and they're often buggy and not well supported.
Windows even excels in areas that Macs are stereotyped to be superior in (Artsy junk), since they are the industry standard and more programs are written for Windows.
Basically, unless your criteria for computer selection involves what colors it comes in, how rounded the edges are, how cute it will look with your purse, etc etc, you're going to want to buy a Windows. [ Comrade's advice column | Ask Comrade A Question ]

*Cheaper
*Easier to use
*Easy to fix if something goes wrong
To name a few.
I associate macs with the more graphics side of things. Yeah, they may not be vulnerable to viruses like PC's are - but a good anti virus program will cover that. [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]

Unless they specifically recommend using a Mac, it's safer to use a PC. Windows laptops are also much cheaper, and Windows experience is currently more valuable.
