Question Posted Monday August 25 2008, 12:11 am

14/f

Last year I started cutting myself. My friend told me why she cut, and after I was extremely depressed and so I decided to try it. To my surprise it actually calmed me and felt good. And for the next year it was a coping mechanism for me. But I stopped three months ago and vowed never to hurt myself again. But it is so hard not to. Sometimes its all I think about. what can I do to keep me from cutting again?? Please help me.

DONT ever punish yourself because of something you are upset about. instead of cutting, write down how you feel or write poetry, or vent to your best friend, or write down your bad feelings or whats hurting you and burn it. watch it burn. that will make you feel better.
i hope this helps!:)

When i was in the 7th grade, I used to cut...I won't get into detail about why because that's not important, but I will tell you this: My best friend, Michael found out what I was doing, and he asked me why I did it. So I told him it felt to me like it was the only thing i had control over, and doing it helped me to forget about what was bothering me. Thats when he told me the best piece of advice I've ever heard about this very subject: When you cut yourself, it makes you forget the emotional pain because it causes you physical pain instead...But it also causes scars. And when you look at those scars, they remind you why they're there, and you feel both the physical and emotional pain all at once. So really, there's no point to it. Him telling me that gave me the motivation to quit, but it's really not something you can stop doing over night. As you may know, it's almost like an addiction...For pain. You get urges when things go wrong, but here are some alternatives you can do instead that can help you quit slowly but surely.

When you feel like cutting:

- (This worked the best) Wear a rubberband around your wrist, and snap it.

- Draw a red line on your wrist with a red marker.

- Write a poem about what was bothering you.

- Light some candles and turn off the lights.

- *IMPORTANT* Get rid of all the instruments you use to hurt yourself / keep them out of your reach.
- Find a hobby to get your mind off of things.

With time and practice upon diverting your thoughts, you will be able to kick the habit whether it's next week or next month. Just keep in mind that you aren't the only one who doesn't know how to cope; different things work for different people, and that there are people everyday going through things you wouldn't have thought of outside the movie theater. Just remember "Rome wasn't built in a day."

i know what you're going through and the fact that you don't want to hurt yourself anymore is such a big step already. try and find something else to help you cope. try art, or just working out when you're angry or upset will tire you out and hopefully calm you down. find something you're interested in and go with it.

also, if you can find someone to confide in, and help talk you through it, it might help you out alot.

i hope i helped, and good luck with everything.

You've already done the first couple of steps in which you have admitted that you have a problem and that you are trying to stop. That seriously deserves some praise.

Stopping completely is a little bit harder.

First off, do you have a good friend or family member that you can talk to? A good start is to have support from loved ones. People to turn to when you feel like you want to hurt yourself again.

Second, you mentioned that was a coping mechanism. Have you tried looking into other methods of coping? Yeah, you have your standard "express yourself in creative stuff" but you sound like you want to grapple with life and really be in the fray.

So have you tried maybe signing up for a karate class? The work out will increase the releasing of endorphines in your body and personally, I think there's no better way to take out the aggression and hurt of everyday life than to beat the living daylights out of a practice dummy or a sparring partner. If anything, it's a new activity to add to your life.

Cheers,
stargirl
