These kinds of formulas are an ok place to start, but use them as a guideline not as absolute truth. They can only vaguely approximate the calories you burn through daily activities. So, see how the weight loss progresses and then tweak your calories up and down depending on whether it is too slow or too fast. Ideally 1 to 2 pounds a week is ideal for most people. littlemisschatterbox answered Saturday August 9 2008, 11:33 pm: It depends. The "average American" needs 2,000 calories a day, but the amount varies depending on how much exercise you get, how much you weigh, how old you are, etc. The best way to lose weight is to slowly cut down on calories (try drinking more water, chewing more slowly) while exercizing more. If you're considering losing serious weight, your best bet would be to go to your doctor and pick out a diet that's best for you.
