Is there such thing as being allergic to rabbits?

Question Posted Friday August 8 2008, 4:32 pm

When my mom was petting a rabbit she broke out in hives like 5 minutes after we left the bunny. She said she was itchy and he nose was running. So is she allergic to rabbits? And is there such thing as being allergic to them.

Most likely she is allergic to rabbits, however my mother is the same way and you might want to look into if shes allergic to dander. Almodt all animals with fur have dander and just to be safe i would check on that.

Unfortunately, all animals carry germs, bacteria and viri (viri is the CORRECT plural form of virus) which can make some people become ill.

It would not be the rabbit itsself that your mother has a negative reaction to, but to the "visitors" on the rabbit!

I think that only an allergist can evaluate this situation. I do not know how compatible that rabbits are to being given a bath, I know they bite and scratch when they are upset. A clean animal is the first course of defense to a health adverse reaction. But you need to know the actual cause first.

Cats lick themselves so much that they are known to be unclean animals. Cats invite germs, bacteria and viri on their bodies as the process of their licking, something that dogs do much less of.

Another thing to consider is that your mother may not have built up her immune system to the pet. Her getting sick or reacting with maladies may be her first steps to curing herself of the situation, but, medical advice needs to be sought from a physician FIRSt before you try to "cure" her by keeping her in contact with your pet.

Always seek qualified medical advice whenever you have a medical question or problem. Always. And I am not from the medical field, I just know better than to form personal opinions on things I do not know about! <grinning>

Yes. Your mother isn't exactly allergic to rabbits. She is allergic to they're fur and dander. Which means shes probably allergic other similar animals with fur as well, like cats. This just means she can't pet them and play with them like most people can, or be in a room where they live. Its easily treatable though, all she needs to do is get a generic dander and fur allergy medicine. She could probably find a pretty good one over the counter one at your local CVS or Walgreens.

Yes. There is a such thing as a rabbit allergy. If she is allergic to cats, she might as well be allergic to rabbits. Also, if the rabbits were around hay (hay is a very important item to a rabbit) she may have an allergy to the hay as well.

My mom is allergic to everything under the sun, including water! Yes, water. She breaks out in hives when she takes a shower. Funny, I know.

:)
