I'm 14 and I've always been really shy. When I was little, I hardly ever talked to anyone outside my family until I was 7 or 8 years old. Now it's not as bad but I'm still shy. I know it's because I have really low self esteem and I'm always afraid of what other people will think of me. I don't know what to do. How can I stop being shy?
Yes, being shy is hard to overcome, especially when you have low self esteme. I agree with one of the other answers, try to make a compliment to yourself every day. Or write down things you like about yourself. Maybe try to hold your chin a little higher when you're walking through school/work. In order to become less shy, you may want to try and open up a little more. Tell people (friends, family, etc.) how you feel.

You can do this when you're looking in a mirror, make a compliment about yourself, out loud or in your head. Say things you would tell someone you love or deeply care about.
Practice being more social by getting involved in more social activities. Take special interest classes on topics that interest you, or join a bookclub, or dancing lessons... whatever. Just get out more and get involved and make an effort to reach out to other people there. Take baby steps at first, by starting with situations you feel most comfortable with. Then start challenging your self by taking bigger risks.

That way you know it was silly, the person will laugh at you, but you won't take it too personal and you will feel more comfortable, thats just what i do, maybe it wont work for you. You can also just try & gain some self esteem, tell yourself your the hottest thing in the room & nothing else, dont think about what others think and just start up a conversation!
