playing guitar

Question Posted Friday June 27 2008, 1:36 am

I really badly want to learn to play the guitar. I thought I would start off learning with an acoustic guitar. But I have some questions...
1) If you know how to play the acoustic guitar can you automatically be able to play an electic guitar? (By that I mean like the guitars you see rock bands like Bon Jovi, Buckcherry, and Coldplay using)
2) I'm left-handed. I know I will have to get a special guitar to play. But I will need to take lessons and if the instructor is right-handed can he still teach me? If so, will it be hard for him to teach me? Or should I just find a left-handed instructor?
3) What are like the best kind of guitars? Cost is not an issue so please give me the best you can think of.
4) What kind of accesories will I need for my new guitar? (ex. guitar pick, carrying case, strap...?)
5) Can you give me some links to good begginer guitars?
Thank you in advance!

I used to take guitar lessons (for about 3 years; I quit last year) so hopefully I can help you out.
1)I don't see why not. I was able to make the change pretty smoothly; it took a tiny bit of time to adjust to the smaller size but it wasn't that hard.
2)Your teacher will still be able to teach you just fine- the only difference will be that you do everything oppositely.
3)I had Fenders for both my acoustic and my electric. They were good- they were sturdy, they played well, etc. There are surely other good (better) brands out there, but I'm not in possession of such info because it's never interested me all that much. C:
4)In addition to the already mentioned case, pick, and strap, you'd want a metronome to help you keep the beat, a tuner to... tune :P, a clamp, which holds onto any specific fret so you can play in a different key, and extra strings just incase. There are probably more, but I can't think of them right now.
5)The best I can do is give you the link to Fender's guitar page- but they make good beginner guitars: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Hope I helped you out at least a little bit! Good luck. :]

learning acoustic guitar is a good start. most likely you will not be able to play the electric guitar right away, but it depends on what you mean. because i think anything you can play on the acoustic guitar you can play on the electric guitar and vice versa. but traditionally the acoustic and electric guitar playing styles are different. you will still learn all of your basic need to know chords. your instructor could probably better teach you anything you need to know about the guitar. Just tell the instructor the kind of music that you like and they should be able to help you become the musician you hope to be. also if you go to a good instuctor they should have no problem teaching you left handed. it won't be as easy as if you were right handed but they should be able to do it fine. i've also heard of some left handed people playing the guitar right handed, so you may want to try both ways and see which is more comfortable. Acoustically you would probably want to get a dean, epiphone, or a gibson. personally i don't think fender makes that great of an acoustic, but thats just my opinion. also if you could have someone who knows about guitars go with you to get yours that would be great, or the people who work there are usually very knowledgable. as for electric guitars, fender stratacaster is an amazing guitar. you will need like a million guitar picks because they get lost really really easily, always keep one with you. you will need a guitar case thats decent. you might need a kapo, which changes the key of your guitar. you also will need good strings because usually when you buy a guitar the store puts cheap strings on it depending on where you go. if your going to get an electric guitar you will need an amplifyer. thats all i can think of as for need right now.
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) is a great place to get guitar tabs or chords for your favorite song. they don't have EVERYTHING. but they sure have a lot. i would be surprised if they didn't have what you are looking for. Nirvana has some easy songs you could start off with if your into them. HAPPY GUITAR PLAYING! :D

Hi I have a guitar too, mine is first act and it works pretty good. Gibson is a good guitar too. I am having trouble playing guitar too, but that is b/c I am so used to playing the piano.

It shouldn't matter that your left handed. The instructor should be able to teach you, and yeah you should get a few picks and a carrying case. That strap is needed only if you want to play while your standing. For me its easier to sit and play. Also get the First Act beginner book, it teaches you all the chords. Its really helpful, but you may still need an instructor, so he can help you with where to put your fingers and how to tune in the guitar.
