Question Posted Friday June 13 2008, 12:09 am

Im fourteen, female.
I have a pool in my backyard and a few guy friends. And being a girl I cant ALWAYS go swimming.
Like, when that time of month comes around and if the boy across the street just happens to come over then I dont just want to tell him to go away. Im on my period. That would be awkward..
But Ive tried using a tampon but it just wont...GO IN! Urrrghh, its so frustrating. And Im not really willing to practice.
But someone told me quiite some time ago that 'it' stops underwater, which I hardly believe.
But do you have any suggestions?

It can still "run" underwater depending on how saturated the tampon is (yea, gross).. But it should stop underwater if a person puts a new tampon in right before swimming.
As for putting it in:
The absolute key is to be as relaxed as possible, and to not think about it so much; do NOT think about the discomfort you have previously experienced. Make sure to put some sort of lubricant on the applicator.
Try it during or after a shower, or whenever you feel more relaxed. Hey, wake up at some random time at night and try- see if it works.. (Since you'd be sleepy and relaxed.. less likely to get nervous about it, and eager to go back to sleep).

After you've done it at least once, that confidence should help you as well..
Don't worry, just keep trying. You'll do it when you're angry enough at yourself. haha
I didn't try using tampons until I was 16! It took me a relatively short time to be able to use them though..

I feel your pain. And ive heard that rumor too, and ive learnt from experience.. it aint true. Why dont you just sit by the pool.I mean if your also trying to imprss the guy especially... sit by the pool and kick/splash the water or sumthing =)seems like a very flirty technique. If you really want a get out of jail free card. Let him in but blame the fact you dont want to swin on-I dont want my hair wet-feeling slightly illBut I feel your pain about the tampon. I looked at myself with a mirror for a bit to like help understand where to put it... which helps... a bit i suposse. But if your a virgin ive been told you shud really use one.. as it hurts or sumthyn like that. But i wudnt know... as i havent actully got round to usin the damn thing lolanywaisBest of luckVikki

Hey Im back again editing my answer. Um LEtting you know, ive concered the fear of it lol, um yeah mirror=good help! Um the main thing is to relax you muscles down there - which i knwo is hard cuz ur tense down there as its the time of month ANYWAY, (which i guess makes being a girl better than being a boy - look at what we go through!) On your first time just deep breathes and close your eyes, think of a relaxing song or something to take your mind of things. honestly it does help. Um i dunno where ur frum buh im from the UK and tampax (pink ones) seem to work pretty gd for me. But good luck once again.

i was just like you! I believe that you should start small(like card board) which you need to relax and kinda twist a little to get in. Then you might want to use pearl tampons, they are a little bigger but going much smoother! dont work every girl has to deal with the fright of tampons but its better to get it over with sooner then later. I will be fine and i will be in before you know it!! ;)

It doesn't really stop under water..
You can just say you don't feel well.
I'd suggest trying o.b. tampons. They go in easier that any other brand I've tried.

"It" doesn't actually stop in water, and I know it's embaressing to have to tell somebody you can't go swimming becasue of "it".

Just tell them you aren't feeling well, or you're not in the mood to go swimming. This way, you're not completely lying to them.

Some excuses:
*You aren't feeling too well
*It needs to be cleaned
*If you have any siblings, say they will be using it
*You're too busy
and no it doesn't stop in water.. but if you keep trying tampons, it WILL go in eventually, if you keep relaxed. Have you tried smaller sized tampons?
