I read in a book about an ingredient in some shampoos and conditioners that is really important to look for.

It was called panthenol. It is suppose to be the B5 pro-vitamin and helps to strengthen the hair by filling in damaged areas, leading to less breakage and a smoother feel. It is suppose to help retain moisture (helping to keep it shiney) and thicken hair strands as well. Look for hair products containing this.

In addition, the book I was reading suggested finding a leave-in conditioner that had panthenol in it (some are even labeled on the front of the bottle) to help repair the hair follicles. The book claimed that this was the best method to repairing damaged hair and, if used properly for an extended period of time, would eventually "heal" the hair completely.

Whenever you apply any kind of heat to your hair (blowdrying, straightening, curling) you HAVE to protect it. Buy a heat protecting spray made by Tressemme.

There is no way you can reverse hair damage. You can't repair hair that's already damaged and broken. The only thing you can do to get rid of it is cut off the split ends.

What you can do after that is buy shampoos and conditioners to prevent breakage. Try TLC shampoo by Sunsilk and Neutrogena leave-in conditioner, or their triple moisture daily conditioner.

Burt's Bees repair shampoos/conditioners. You can find them nearly anywhere they sell shampoos. Although, they may come off as rather pricey. But they're all natural and work like magic.
Try it and if you don't like it, you can always stick to the herbal treatment shampoos/conditioners at stores such as Whole Foods. Those work as well :)
Good luck, and, if you can, try straightening/blowdrying it less! Unless you really need to, of course.

try a shampoo that is specialy for dry hair like pantene or fructis.

and getting a hair cut or trim always makes it feel better.
