when people say that something is "overated" what do they mean by that???

Many people have already answered this, but i'll answer, anyway haha :] Overrated means that something is too talked about. Like, there's too much extended excitement over something. For example, Myspace: Thousands of people use Myspace & hundreds of people mention it daily.

They mean that the something in question doesn't live up to the hype that proceeds it.

overrated means something that is given too much hype and when you actaully do it or witness it it's not actuallly not worth or the talk and hype

Something is not really as good as people said it was. Like, if your friends talk about how great a movie is, and when you go see it you think it sucks. The movie would be overrated.
