There are two different kinds of pits. There is a push pit, which is when everyone is crammed together without any breathing room and are being pushed from different directions, not being able to move. Then there are the mosh pits, which in my opinion are fun, but dangerous.
Some people "two step" around the circle ( two mini hops on one foot, swing other foot in front and repeat), and push people around. There are the people who go into the middle and windmill kick and flail their arms everywhere. There people who intentionally try to hit someone and just run in and start throwing punches. Or there are the kind where no one goes into the circle, and people from the outside get shoved across and ram into the other side of people. I've seen many people get hurt pretty badly in mosh pits. Coming out of them bleeding and beaten up horribly. I, myself, have gotten a black eye, a fat lip, and plenty of bruises.

But basically a type of dancing, altho it looks more like a ritual of some sort lol. If you want a visual idea type "moshing" into youtube!
