Caring for Betta fish

Question Posted Friday February 22 2008, 2:43 pm

I just got a male betta fish, and was wondering what size tank is best for them?

I got a kit that includes a 1/2 gallon aquarium, food, water conditioner, and gravel. I think that should be okay, but I've read mixed things about tank size.

Any information on caring for Betta fish is appreciated.

Bettas' natural habitat is actually in rice patties in Asia. The rice patties are shallow and usually murky so there isn't much room for them to swim around in. I've read that they have even been found living fine and dandy in small bits of water similar to puddles!

This being said, Bettas are happy and healthy living in small tanks of water. However, if you choose, you can give your Betta a little bit larger tank (I'd say a 5 or 10 gallon tank would be okay).

I use to have a Betta who lived in a 10 gallon tank alone for years before passing away but most people don't see the point in devoting an entire tank to one fish (and cleaning an entire tank like that for just one fish).

Remember that they will "fight" eachother to the death too so please do not put another Betta in the tank. I've seen some people think it's funny to watch them fight for awhile (but not until death) before separating them only to see the fish suffer for hours before passing on.

So, your tank size is just fine and dandy but you can "upgrade" in the future if you choose. Make sure you always treat the water before placing the fish in though.

Another name for the Beta Fish is a Japenese Fighting fis They get their name for wanting to fight other males. Follow the directions that came with the tank. Another good idea is to place a mirror behind the tank and watch as he tries to fight his image, congratulations on getting a beautiful fish.
