You start from the bottom of your hair brushing, lift your hair up completely and drop some stands at a time. Brush those stands, and once all the tangles are out from those - drop more hair until you're finished. You may want to do this by doing the left side, and then the right side of your head - it's easier that way.

When you shampoo, squeeze the shampoo into your hair, basically don't rub it in, just squeeze it in with your hands. Its supposed to make funny noises as you squeeze it because of the suds. The idea is to not create any tangles. Also avoid folding your hair on top of your head (if you know what I mean) and lathering that way.
Of course, you tons of conditioner, the thicker the consistency of it the better. I recommend Pantene or Herbal Essence. Brush the conditioner through your hair with your fingers, adding more conditioner to any knots that you feel. Again, avoid folding your hair on top of your head.
When you towel dry, squeeze your hair, don't rub the towel through your hair. Basically blotch your hair.
Dry hair is also easier to brush than wet or damp hair.
karenR answered Monday February 11 2008, 11:40 pm: I have long hair that tangles easily too.
The ONLY way I can get the tangles out is to
put conditioner in my hair and brush or comb
it out with the conditioner on my hair.
I usually do this while in the shower. I don't
shampoo my hair everyday, but conditioning is a must! It works very well and after I towel dry my hair I brush it again with no problems at all. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]

Also, try using a shampoo that is for dry/normal hair...these will usually contain more moisturizers which will help to detangle your hair. Cherry_Blow_Pop answered Monday February 11 2008, 11:15 pm: I would suggest using a leave-in conditioner that you put on right when you get out of the shower, you can also try a de-tangling spray that you use while you hair is wet, and it makes it much easier to brush your hair.
Or, when you put conditioner in your hair when you are in the shower, use a comb and comb the conditioner through your hair. That may help.
