Why would a guy/group of guys start talking to you for no reason?

Oops, I meant if they knew you for a long time and they've never talked to you before. My bad. :).

They're being polite
They want to be friends
They may like you
etc.
Just because they're guys doesn't mean they can't strike up a conversation.

Um, what are they "talking" about? Where were you at? I'm a dude and sometimes in the past I would go have a few beers with my guy friends at the bar. If we happened to spot a chick that was cute we'd go up and try to talk to her. We'd make a bet to see who she find more interesting. So this maybe the case here too.
