piercing

Question Posted Sunday January 6 2008, 9:28 am

Last night, I pierced MY OWN ears. I play after school sports, and the coach is gonna make me take out the piercings. Its only 2 hours, and so could I take them out for two hours, without them closing up? And if not, should I wait a week and then do it like that? Also, any advice other general advice for how to care for them?
And now I'm afraid that they could be infected. But isn't it only supposed to be infected if its been 24 hours or shorter, and so if pain lasts longer than that, then its been infected? And if so, and I don't feel any pain at all, right now (been about 16 hours) and so what if I began to feel pain in like 2 days or something?
I gave myself three new piercings. (I already had the first normal two). If you can answer just one part, or give me just any advice at all, I would be so thankful!

If you pierced them LAST NIGHT, they will heal enough that it'll be hard to put them in.
I've never had it done that I could take them out until at least the three-week mark. At four weeks, you can change them for other earrings.
Clean the earrings every day with rubbing alcohol, and turn the posts.
If you KEEP CLEANING the earrings and your ears, they won't get infected, cuz the alcohol kills the bacteria.
Here's the rule I was taught for taking them out, and I always follow it: 4-6 weeks with the same earrings, don't remove them.
7-10 weeks with post earrings, not the loop kind.
10-12 weeks try loop earrings, but remove for sleeping.
12+ do whatever....

So far as I know, your piercing can get infected at anytime before it is healed. Now, I don't remember exactly how long it takes ear piercings to heal.

Be sure to always keep it clean. If you remove the earring, clean it and the area before reinserting it.
I would avoid peroxide, because it stays moist. That makes your piercing a breeding ground for infection.
I would wash with a mild soap, and use rubbing alcohol.
The rubbing alcohol burns, but it evaporates quickly so it leaves no moisture in the piercing. That, and it is a wonderful disinfectant.
Of course you know to periodically turn the earring throughout the day during the healing process.

Now, if your ear turns all red, then there is potentially an infection. If that is the case, you will want to completely remove the earrings.
You won't want to put them back in- let the hole heal and close over, then redo it.

If you pierced the lobes, it shouldn't really hurt much at all. If it is a continuous pain that lasts, remove the earrings, it's probably infected.

Oh no!!! Don't put any petroleum jelly or lotion on your ears. Oh gosh, that's like begging for infection to occur.

Here are some links to help you take care of your piercings.

You earrings are okay to take out for two hours, but make sure that the earing are clean when you put them back in. The reason you're coach told you to take out your earrings is so that they don't get caught on something and don't get ripped out, so don't compensate by getting clear earrings.

For the pain, it helps to put ice cubes on the ears, which is a lot better for you than taking Advil or something.

Ps. Next time, get your piercings done professionally.

One thing you can do if you don't want to have to take them out for sports, is go to the mall, like, a store like a jewelry type one, or hot topic or spencers, and you can get clear earrings, called retainers. To take care of them, just clean the earrings and your ear twice a day with alcohol, or neosporin, or peroxide or something. That should do it. They probably aren't infected. Sometimes they hurt people untill they are all the way healed. Don't worry. I hope I've helped!

well the first week you should keep the ear rings on because its still fresh
just put patroleum jelyy on your ears, that works sometimes
also use normal lotion
if you keep it clean, it shouldnt get infected, but if it does then go to the drug store and ask them what you can do
